Dear Mason Families,
One quote that stuck with me from Parent Camp was from the world renowned author Brene Brown. She states, "At the end of every day, at the end of every week, at the end of my life, I want to be able to say that I contributed more than I criticized." I ask us as adults to truly reflect on that quote and ask ourselves the following questions: Are we modeling for our learners what it truly means to contribute to our community? How often do we negatively criticize things in front of our learners? Are we a part of the solution to make situations better? Do we look for ways to solve problems that help all involved? Judging/criticizing is the easy part but contributing and being a part of the process to change what is seen as a the problem is extremely hard.
So proud to be a part of the Mason Community,
Roy Bishop, Jr.
Principal

Four ways to strengthen your child’s character
Teachers help their students learn important skills and facts. But when it comes to teaching values, parents are the best teachers.
And, like any teacher, you need a lesson plan. Here are four strategies for building your child’s character:
- Think about the values that are important to you and your family. Talk about them openly with your child.
- Teach by example. A parent’s example is the most powerful teacher of all. Ask yourself, “If my child could watch my behavior all day, what lessons would she learn?”
- Set high standards. Expect your child to act responsibly, to be kind to others and to tell the truth. Some families make it a point of family pride. “In the Smith family, we tell the truth.”
- Teach the Golden Rule. Teaching your child to treat others as she would like to be treated will help her make good choices. She should ask herself, “Would I want someone to talk to me that way?”

Early Arrivals
Please be reminded that students should not be dropped off at school prior to 8:45AM (Mon) and 8:10AM(Tu-Fri). If your child walks to school please help them to determine what time they should leave the house so they arrive no earlier than 8:45AM (Mon.) and 8:10AM (Tu.-Fri.). Prior to 8:45AM (Mon.) and 8:10AM(Tu.-Fri) there aren’t any dedicated adults on duty to supervise students in the building. We are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of the building and students prior to that time.
Please do not have your child(ren) arrive prior to 8:45AM (Mon.) and 8:10(Tu.-Fri.), as there are no adults to supervise them before that time.
If you need to drop off your child(ren) before 8:45AM (Mon.) and 8:10(Tu.-Fri.), you are welcome to sign up for Kids Club which begins at 7:00AM. You may also drop off your child(ren) for breakfast club at 8:15AM(Mon) and 7:45(Tu.-Fri). There are fees for both of these programs.
Thank you for cooperating with us and helping keep your child safe.
Parking Lot Reminders
Double Parking
We know the parking lot gets very bust in the morning and afternoon. However, there is no double parking. You may NOT stand or park next to another vehicle to load/unload passengers. This not only endangers your child, but also seriously impedes the traffic flow. Your vehicle may be reported to the public works department and be issued a $175.00 fine.Parking in a Fire Route
The fire route includes the entrancement drive from Vernier Rd. along the sidewalks leading to the main doors. Parking here could result in a $50 fine.
Please be patient, careful and kind in the parking lot.

GPPSS Prepared For Coronavirus Response
While there have been no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) reported in Michigan as of February 20, GPPSS is closely following updates to the guidance issued by the Wayne County Health Department, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC is currently reporting 13 confirmed cases nationwide. Therefore, the immediate health risk to the general U.S. public is considered low at this time. Additionally, there are no recommendations by federal, state or local public health officials to cancel events or restrict travel within the United States. The CDC is recommending avoiding nonessential travel to China. Traveler updates are available at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/warning/novel-coronavirus-wuhan-china. For up-to-date information on coronavirus visit www.michigan.gov/coronavirus
To prevent the spread of viruses such as the flu, common cold and coronavirus:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. If not available, use hand sanitizer
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing
- Avoid contact with people who are sick. If you are sick, stay home, and avoid contact with others.
