Falco January Newsletter 2020
Newsletter for Five Oaks and Rachel Carson Middle School
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Five Oaks and Rachel Carson Community,
We want to take this opportunity to provide an update and resources for you to share with your student about the dangers of abusing prescription medication.
You may have heard some misinformation circulating in our school community about the situation involving students taking the prescription medication, Xanax, earlier this month.
The investigation regarding the incident is being handled by law enforcement. Any questions should be directed to the Beaverton Police Department. For student and health privacy reasons, we cannot share information about the students involved or their conditions.
What we can do, is work together as a school community to educate students about safe behavior. We are working on an advisory period lesson on this topic. We also encourage you to talk with your student about the dangers of taking medications that are not prescribed to them. If you are unsure how to raise this issue, Partnership for Drug-Free Kids has resources to help. The website includes a fact page specifically about Xanax that outlines the risks of abusing Xanax and signs to watch out for.
The Five Oaks and Rachel Carson staff will continue working to provide all students with a safe, positive learning environment.
Thank you for your support.
Principal Brock

WELLNESS TOOLKITS
This year, Mrs. Hereford would like to assemble six “calming toolkits” to be used throughout Five Oaks and Rachel Carson. Each toolkit would contain sensory tools (thinking putty, fidgets, scented markers, playing cards, etc.) designed to help with emotional regulation.
If you would like to help, please click on the Amazon link below and you’ll be directed to a wish list that was created in consultation with a local pediatric occupational therapist. Crazy Aaron’s Thinking Putty Mini-Tins are also really helpful. The best price for Mini-Tins is available at: https://puttyworld.com/. Thank you so very much for helping all our students to feel their best!

Parents and Guardians:
Exclusion day is fast approaching for immunizations. Our registrar began notifying you of needed immunizations starting in October. Please get the immunizations done at your provider's office and return the completed paperwork to school to the school. We must send a list of students with incomplete immunization records to Washington County in the beginning of January and we need time to ensure that immunization records are entered into our computer system.
Washington County Health Department will then send you an exclusion notice. Your child will be excluded as of February 19th 2020 if immunizations are not up to date or complete. Absences for exclusion are considered unexcused. It can be very difficult to get an appointment with a provider for several weeks before exclusion so please get this done now! It is also the perfect time to get a flu shot for your child if you have not already done so.
Padres y tutores:

In November our 8th graders took the PreACT 8/9. Along with giving students an early practice experience for the ACT test, it also gives each student information about their skills, interests, plans and goals.
Counselors are sharing the results of the PreACT 8/9 with 8th graders starting on January 7th. All results should be in 8th graders hands by January 17th. Please ask your 8th grader to see their PreACT 8/9 Student Report and the accompanying booklet which explains the results.
High School Forecasting
As 8th graders creep towards the second semester, High School is right around the corner. To prepare for high school, there are a few important dates coming up.

February 11—Forecasting part 1. High School Counselors will be here at Five Oaks to speak with our 8th graders about choosing classes for their 9th grade year.
