Nutritional Sciences Major
Flexible Nutrition Option & Dietetics Option
THANK YOU FOR EXPRESSING YOUR INTEREST IN THE NUTRITIONAL SCIENCES MAJOR OFFERED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA!
Two options are offered.
Option 1- Dietetics: This option is often chosen by students who plan to pursue a career in the field of dietetics, mostly likely as a Registered Dietitian.
Option 2 - Nutrition: This option has many of the same science foundation courses and core nutrition course requirements as the Dietetics option, but it offers flexibility in the course requirements and allows students to make choices to incorporate a specific emphasis into the degree.
Note: This is a chemistry intensive major

INCORPORATE PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL PREREQUISITES INTO YOUR 18 UNIT CUSTOM BUILT EMPHASIS!
Professional schools include:

18 units minimum are required in the emphasis.
A minimum of 42 units of upper-division credit is required for this degree. NSC coursework provides 25 upper division units, therefore leaving 17 units to be obtained through Tier II gen-eds and/or appropriate upper division emphasis/minor/second major/dual degree coursework.
Ex: 17 upper division units in emphasis OR 9 units of Tier II gen-eds and 8 units of upper division emphasis coursework.

WHAT CAN I DO WITH A NUTRITION DEGREE?
Dietetics option: The Dietetics option has been accredited by ACEND, the agency responsible for credentialing all undergraduate dietetic programs and dietetic internships in the U.S. with the intention of graduating students who are RD/DTR eligible. Students who pursue this option and begin an internship after graduation have opportunities to work in clinical nutrition, community nutrition, nutrition counseling, and food service management.
Nutrition option: The nutrition option can open the pathways to professional schools such as pharmacy, medical, dental, physician assistant and physical therapy programs. This option also allows students to go into the fields of food and nutrition management, public health nutrition, education and research, consultant/private practice, business and industry, international food organizations, and public policy/government.
