CMSD's Summer Learning Experience
Get ready for another amazing summer
The CMSD Summer Learning Experience is back for a second year with something for scholars in preschool through 12th grade. The program will be held at more than 30 school sites throughout the city.
Meals will be provided. High school students will receive tickets to ride RTA. To participate in the Summer Learning Experience, students must attend a CMSD school or be pre-registered to enroll.
Last year’s Summer Learning Experience proved to be very popular, with more than 8,400 students signed up. Registration for this year's program starts April 25. This page will be updated as courses and camps are added.
FINISH and ENGAGE (High school)
High school students can finish the school year strong by making up credits or earning credits for next year. In the afternoon, they can take advantage of employment or internship opportunities. They also can travel to the John Marshall Campus in the afternoon for CMSD-run camps in music, musical theater, cheer and pep squad, martial arts fitness and photography. A volleyball camp for female and male players will be available at East Professional Center.
Dear LWSH Families and Caregivers,
Greetings LWSH Families and Caregivers,
May was an absolutely exciting time with student presentations and celebrations of learning! Our scholars tackled real-world issues, expressed their journeys within their internships, and gave their personal voice to how they can transform their communities! As we move into June, we are celebrating the work that our scholars have done through field trips, award ceremonies, whole-school celebrations, and senior graduation! Please be on the lookout for invitations to these events or see our calendar of events that is embedded in this newsletter.
I am excited to announce that we will be onboarding the class of 2024 into our MetroHealth Campus to enrich their healthcare experience through job shadowing and internships. Because of our unique program and location, and the safety of patients and caregivers at MetroHealth Hospital, all staff and scholars must maintain the same status as MetroHealth personnel, volunteers, and contractors. Therefore, prior to the 22-23 school year, all 11th and 12th grade students must be fully vaccinated in order to continue to attend LWSH. It is critical that each attending student complete this form with their guardians to ensure that you are able to attend. Prior to completing this form, please be sure you have available to you the following information to be uploaded. COVID vaccination cards and up-to-date vaccinations required for school, including influenza (flu shots) and Tuberculosis (TB) testing. These vaccinations and tests may be taken at your doctor's office or at your local drug stores like Walgreens and CVS. In addition to this, you will also need to complete the Observer Vaccination Packet for MetroHealth Hospital that is embedded in this newsletter and was sent home with scholars.
We look forward to our new juniors and upcoming seniors getting real-world clinical experiences and opportunities through the MetroHealth system and our seniors continuing their journey in the healthcare industry.
Sincerely,
Principal Juliet King

School-Wide Cedar Point Field Trip
Dear LWSH Scholars and Families,
Our school-wide Cedar Point Field trip is on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, for the amusement park only. There is no additional field trip form needed from you as we already have your scholars on file. We will leave Lincoln West Science and Health promptly at 9am and arrive back to Lincoln West Science and Health at 6pm. Please have transportation set up for your scholar in advance from the high school at 6pm. Students will not be able to enter the building when they return. Students will receive one meal voucher and a drink wristband (drinks are unlimited).
A few notes regarding the park. Cedar Point is cashless; therefore, scholars can purchase items using an ATM/Credit Card, Google or Apple Pay, or use their cash to purchase a Cedar Point card (any funds on the card are not refundable and only able to be used at Cedar Point). Additionally, scholars should dress school appropriately for summer weather and wear comfortable shoes. If your scholar brings a backpack, they may need to purchase a locker for specific rides, therefore we advise no bag or a fanny pack. Please note any violations including criminal, resulting in scholars removed from the park are parent/guardian responsibility of picking them up from the park. For more information, feel free to call the school at 216-838-7100. Thank you!

New COVID School Guidelines and Testing
Important New Messages
- New for Semester 2: All ripped jeans that reveal large amounts of skin will need to be worn with leggings. No crop tops are allowed to be worn in school, including with zipped hoodies over them. No full-face masks that reveal only the eyes. Scholars that do not adhere to the dress code will be placed in the planning center for the day. We aim to maintain a professional environment as our scholars are or will be working within one when they attend MetroHealth.
- Opportunity School: Students may now be assigned Opportunity School for low-level disciplinary offenses by teachers and school administration. Opportunity School is an after school detention for 1-2 hours after school (3:45pm - 4:45pm or 3:45pm - 5:45pm). During Opportunity School, scholars are given the "opportunity" to make different choices in the future to avoid further consequence. Students will be given a notice in advance of the date they are to serve and parents will be called.
- Late Arrivals and Early Dismissals: We are attempting to curb the problem of many of our scholars arriving to school late and / or leaving early tied to a lack of motivation or high anxiety. It is imperative that they continue their learning even when it feels difficult. We are aware of the anxiety that many of our scholars have been facing since the start of the pandemic, but we are also aware that they can still be successful in school given the supports we provide. If you or your family need access to mental health services, community resources, or would like to create a family plan, please reach out to the school at 216-838-7100.
- Use of Phones: As a school, we are following the district's policy of students maintaining a phone as long as it is put away. We do allow occasions where students are allowed to work quietly and independently with headphones; or step out of class with the teacher's permission to take an important call from a parent or family member. However, any inappropriate use or time of use of the phone can be taken away by the teacher for the remainder of class; or taken from an administrator for a guardian to pick up. Please speak with your child about expectations regarding the phone to allow them to keep it for safety purposes.
- Social Media: We know that our scholars are at an age where social media is at the forefront of a child's source of socialization and communication. However, not all of them are using it properly or for good use, which often times leads to disputes that spill into the school. Please monitor or restrict the use of your child's social media as that is something we cannot control without you.
- Calamity Days: Rather than closing on snow or other calamity days, we will be converting to our remote plan. Our scholars have experience this process twice and are familiar with the procedures. With snow in the forecast, we want to ensure that everyone takes their devices home and brings them to school each day as a routine. If you currently lack internet access, please call the school at 216-838-7100 to request a hotspot.
- Working Remotely from Home: Scholars who must be quarantined or are out of town may resume working remotely from home. A parent or guardian must call the school to make the staff aware of who will be working remotely and are prepared to monitor their work. There will be no synchronous, or on-screen learning with the teachers on in-person days, but any work completed will count toward their overall grade and attendance.
What You Need to Know About the 21-22 School Year
District-Wide COVID Protocols
- All staff, students, and visitors must wear an appropriate face mask while in the building regardless of vaccination status.
- Staff, scholars, and visitors will maintain a distance of 3-ft or more.
- If a scholar is exhibiting COVID symptoms, our on-site nurse will complete an assessment and contact the family immediately. All scholars who show symptoms of COVID will be isolated in our designated COVID room until picked up.
- If your scholar tests positive for COVID, they must quarantine at home for the recommended time of 10 days, and it must be reported to our COVID hotline at 216-838-WELL.
- Once a positive case is confirmed in the school, we notify all families, scholars, and staff via a notice written on district letterhead.
- If your child is NOT exhibiting COVID symptoms when you receive a letter, it is still safe to send them to school. However, if you are contacted directly by a nurse or your child is beginning to show symptoms, you should keep them home and have them COVID tested.
- See CMSD's Plans for a Safe Return To In-Person Instruction and Continuity of Services
- To maintain a professional culture and atmosphere, we are strongly encouraging all LWSH scholars to represent our collaboration and partnership with MetroHealth Hospitals by wearing the shirts provided to them by the schools. This includes both polos and sweatshirts.
- If your scholar is unable to wear the professional attire for LWSH, they do not have to wear the traditional dress code from previous in-person school years; however, the dress must be appropriate. See our district's policy for proper dress on the Back to School Informational section of the CMSD website.
- All seniors and juniors are expected to wear professional attire suitable for intern and partnerships. We are integrating our scholars into the professional environment and all scholars need to dress the part!!!
- New for Semester 2: All ripped jeans that reveal large amounts of skin will need to be worn with leggings. No crop tops are allowed in school, including with zipped hoodies over them. No full-face masks that reveal only the eyes. Scholars that do not adhere to the dress code will be placed in the planning center for the day. We aim to maintain a professional environment as our scholars are or will be working within one when they attend MetroHealth.
- Students must live 1 mile or more away from the school in order to receive RTA bus tickets.
- Students who receive RTA tickets will receive their tickets weekly from our secretary Mrs. McMillan. Please be sure that your child keeps these tickets in a safe place to ensure transportation each day. These tickets are two-way (one ride to school and one ride back home) and include transfers that are valid for up to 2 1/2 hours between transfers.
- If your child is riding on a traditional school bus, you may track your child's bus with locations in real time using our Edulog app.
- If you have any questions or concerns regarding the P-EBT cards, you may contact CMSD's Ombudsman's Office at 216-838-0348, or contact Family and Job Services at 866-244-0071.
- Doors open to scholars beginning at 8:10am Monday - Friday for breakfast. Classes begin at 8:35am and end at 3:35pm. (Please note that some seniors have modified schedules where they do not have morning or afternoon classes. Please call the school and request to speak with our counselor, Mrs. Hubbard for more information regarding senior schedules).
- All parents, guardians, and caregivers are welcome to join our Parent Advisory Committee (AKA PAC). What you will do as a member is to provide us with feedback on our educational program; help us strategize and connect other families to the school; and help us decide how our Title I funds could best be used. The PAC will meet monthly on a regular day and time in order to keep a consistent schedule. We will also offer leadership positions such as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. We sincerely hope that you take time and consider being a vital part of this committee as we consider a vital part of the educational process. To sign up, please fill out this form and someone will reach out to you to provide you with information for our first meeting. Thanks for your involvement and engagement!!!
- Beginning Tuesday, September 7th, our juniors and seniors will report to classes daily at the MetroHealth Campus located at 2500 MetroHealth Drive, just minutes away from the Lincoln-West main campus.
- School start and end times remain the same, and scholars in these grade levels should continue to follow the schedule they had a the main campus.
- Scholars who do not have a first block class, may attend school at their later time; and scholars who do not have a last block class, may check out early. If a scholar plays a sport or is a member of an after-school club, they may wait in a designated area identified by administration to use as a study hall until the end of the day.
- When dropping off or picking your child by car, please be sure to park to your left on West 31st street to avoid blocking residents and traffic. We also ask that you remain in your vehicle. Thank you!
- Now is the time to maximize our efforts to continue socially and academically grow in a post- and new pandemic world by making sure we are learning every day! Please check out the Stay in the Game campaign sponsored by the Cleveland Browns in partnership with CMSD to encourage our families and scholars to learn everyday, whether in person or virtually. Clevelandbrowns.com | Official Site of the Cleveland Browns
- Please be sure that you call the office at 216-838-7100 to report any excused absences so they can be properly marked.
- Understand the long-term impact students leaving early and arriving late has on academic performance and overall test scores. Students should only leave school early if they are ill, need to attend to doctor appointments, or have a family emergency.
- Legal guardians must contact the school for early dismissals. If students leave the campus without parent notification and the proper sign-out procedure, disciplinary action may be taken.
