ALL PARENTS INVITED TO THIS IMPORTANT MEETING

FULTON COUNTY SCHOOLS MAKE-UP DAY

Feb. 16, 2018

Note: ALL FCS will now have school on 2/16/2017

to make up for the school closing during Hurricane Irma

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents,

This extremely short and unexpected week reinforces the Elkins Pointe and Fulton County School priorities. The safety of our students always comes first. On Monday, we are keen to jump in and get back to our students learning!

I would like to thank our parents, teachers, and students for making safety important during dismissal. Thank you to our parents for helping us expedite carpool by staying in your cars, not "popping your trunks," and keeping off cell phones. Also, please continue to stress to your child to walk swiftly, enter the cabin of the vehicle with their backpack, and to stay off their phones until after they have securely buckled in their seatbelt. Thank you for your fast action in carpool, it is starting to move nicely and we have seen a big improvement!

Please continue to have your child work in i-READY. I cannot stress the importance of this enough. We are making a consorted effort to increase the overall usage of i-READY. During the time off, I hope that you had your child log-in to i-READY for 30 minutes per day. Please remind your child that it is important to login in and to sign-out. Signing out ensures that your child's i-READY minutes are accounted. Your child's teachers are tracking i-READY usage and progress. We would be grateful to you for helping us have your child take the exercises seriously.

The weather today is giving us a reprieve from the cold, and thankfully melting the patches of ice. Should the weather drop to a chillier temperature next week, please make sure your child is bundled up at the bus stop.

Looking forward to seeing our Titans on Monday!

HAPPY - Great Day of Robotics!!

The Robotics League Competition was a huge success. Eleven teams took part in the competition and quite a few people from the community (Milton High, Northwestern, Roswell High) showed up to volunteer or simply observe the games. Elkins Pointe did very well as hosts! Throughout the day they received multiple compliments from the teams, visitors, and robotics league organizers. The FTC officials at the games expressed interest in having more robotics events at our school: they were impressed by the hospitality and the facilities.

Thanks to our tireless parents - volunteers for the amazing job done! Without your help, it would be impossible to pull off such a successful event. We were able to raise enough money to cover our expenses for the robot electronics controller (the most expensive part) and two motors!

Many thanks to the school, Principal Smith, Lisa O'Hanlon, Ms. Castleberry and Ms. Thomas, for the generous support of our team and robotics in general!

CONNECTED to the Community!

The FCA team from Elkins Pointe Middle School had the privilege of serving over 125 homeless people at Liberty Baptist Church in downtown Atlanta which is right next door to Ebenezer Baptist Church on Martin Luther King weekend. Our team served breakfast, gave out care packages. We want you all to know how your prayers and donations impacted the lives through the "Hope Ministry Outreach"!! We appreciate all of the students that participate in FCA at EPMS every Thursday as they are making a positive difference!!

MLK Jr. "I Have A Dream" Contest

"I Have A Dream" Contest Due 1/29

The Atlanta Dream will host its annual “I Have a Dream” essay contest to recognize the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Atlanta-area students are asked to submit 300-500 word essays expressing their dream job or dream college.

The contest, which will run until Monday, January 29th, will be judged by a panel including Atlanta Dream president, Theresa Wenzel, to choose contest winners in three categories – Elementary, Middle School, and High School. Each winner will receive tickets to the first 2018 Dream game, be recognized in a game and will receive a school visit from the franchise. The High School winner, one boy, and one girl will also be eligible to receive a $250 scholarship from the Atlanta Dream Youth Foundation.

Entering its historic 11th season, the Atlanta Dream has been connected to Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech from the very beginning. The original Circle of Friends, a group that led to the founding of the organization, took the speech into consideration when naming the franchise.

Essay Contest Details:

  • Every essay should start with “I have a dream….” From that point, it is up to the student to express his or her dream in 300-500 words. In one paragraph, the student should describe if money wasn’t an issue what your dream job or dream college would be.
  • The essay submission should be submitted as an attachment and sent to JrDream@atlantadream.net no later than January 29, 2018. All documents should include the student’s first and last name, school, grade, teacher and guardian contact info.
  • A panel of judges including the president of the Atlanta Dream, Theresa Wenzel, will review the essays and select the winners. Winners will be notified in February.
  • All participants receive a buy one get one free ticket voucher in the Jr. Dream section to the 2018 Home opener and enrolled as a Jr. Dream member.
  • Two winners (one girl and one boy) will be selected from elementary, middle, and high school equaling (6) total winners. The (6) winners will be recognized by the court during the home opener. Students must have birthdate between Sept. 1, 2006, and Aug. 31, 2007

This year’s APCC program will be held from July 12-24, 2018. The student should also submit a single drawing on an 8 ½” x 11” piece of white paper that represents the theme of the convention. In addition, the student should provide a CONFIDENTIAL letter of recommendation (meaning that the letter was written and placed in a sealed envelope before being given to the student for submission) from the student’s teacher or another adult who is not the student’s parent and/or guardian. CLINIC CORNER

Flu Season Is Here…

This time of the year is often referred to as "flu season." According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), influenza (also called flu) viruses and influenza-like illnesses typically circulate widely in the United States from late Fall through early Spring. Although most persons with flu will recover, influenza can cause a serious illness and possibly death, particularly among older adults, very young children, pregnant women, and those with certain chronic medical conditions. Flu viruses tend to peak between December and March, but the timing of flu is very unpredictable and can vary in different parts of the country and from season to season.

CDC and public health officials recommends everyone – 6 months of age and older get a flu vaccine every year. It is especially important for school personnel to get a flu vaccine because children are amongst the most vulnerable to the flu. Therefore, it is important for us to remind parents, students and school staff to get vaccinated every year. Vaccination is the best way to prevent the flu. And by the way, it is a myth: The flu vaccine cannot cause flu. The vaccine contains an inactivated virus or virus particles.

ACHOO...What else can you do to help prevent the spread of the flu?

  1. The first thing is simple….WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY! Wash hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer/rub. Did you know the single most important thing you can do to prevent the spread of infectious illnesses is washing your hands? While most of us already know this, it is sometimes hard to remember this simple little important task during a busy day.
  2. Teach children not to share personal items like drinks, food, eating utensils or other personal items such as towels, combs, brushes, clothes, and cosmetics.
  3. Wash athletic practice clothing each day, and shower after any contact sport.
  4. Stay home if you are sick and not going to a medical care facility, especially during the first days of illness when symptoms are more severe and the infection is most contagious. Return to work or school only after symptoms have improved and after you have had no fever for at least 24 hours.
  5. Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick and take flu antiviral medications if your doctor prescribes them.
  6. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu. Viruses lurk in places you wouldn’t think. Everyone is vulnerable to picking up viruses.
  7. Eat healthy food (fruits and veggies) and drink plenty of fluids.
  8. Make sure your vaccinations are up-to-date. Again, get vaccinated against the flu – flu vaccination is the best protection against the flu, and wash your hands frequently!

❤️ VOLUNTEER IN THE SCHOOL ❤️

Attention Elkins Pointe Parents: SPINE ALERT!

The annual Scoliosis Screening Event for EPMS students is coming up very soon, on Feb. 2nd. Please sign up to be part of the screening team here.

This is a really important event because the ages of 11-14 are the prime time for identification of Scoliosis of the spine. Early detection and treatment are the keys to reversing Scoliosis so it is not a life-long problem. Fulton County nurses run the event, but every year we need parent volunteers to be the "first eyes." Parent Screeners act as primary checkers to make the process move smoothly and quickly for the students. With this important event only 3 weeks away, the PTSA is in desperate need of Scoliosis Screeners for a 3 1/2 hour window on Feb. 2nd from 11:45 am to 3:00 pm. Please see the SignupGenius below if you can sign up as a volunteer. Bonus: We will feed you lunch, snacks, and coffee during the day!

If you were certified last year through the Training Course, you DO NOT NEED to take it again. However, if you have not taken the training course within the last 18 months, you will NEED to attend -- it is a painless 1 1/2 hours on Jan 24th, and then you will be certified for 2 years. Please consider volunteering your time for this very worthwhile service event that EPMS provides to its students. Please, direct questions to Jennifer Rodman: jcrodman@yahoo.com
