Leader in Me - Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
January Habit #5 – Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
This means that it is better to listen first and talk second. By taking the time to listen to another person, you reach a higher level of communication. Young children find it difficult to understand another’s paradigm (point of view). This habit is best approached by introducing listening as a skill that should be practiced. Learning to listen without interrupting and learning to listen with your ears, your eyes, and your heart will help children build a foundation for Habit 5. Simply put, we have two ears and one mouth so that we can spend more time listening with the intent to understand.
Activities
1. To better understand how listening can help or hurt a relationship, try “pretend listening” with your child for a few minutes. Your child will be frustrated. Explain what you were doing and discuss how your child felt. Now have your child ignore you when you are talking. Discuss how it makes you feel when you are ignored. Finish the discussion by thinking of ways to let the other person know when you feel you are not being truly listened to. Remind your child that this is also an example of Think Win-Win.
2. Body language can be even more important than words. Play a game with your kids where you each try to guess the other’s emotion (happy, sad, angry, frustrated, bored, etc.) without using any words, just body language.
3. Demonstrate how saying the same phrase in a different tone of voice can give the phrase a completely different meaning. Try emphasizing different words in the phrase “I didn’t say you did it” and then have your child tell you how the meaning changed.
Student Drop Off - IMPORTANT CHANGES - Student Safety
If checking in through the office, we appreciate your help in getting classes started on time by leaving campus when the first bell rings. We really appreciate your help with this. Photo ID is required to check in.
ALL YEAR: Please continue to drop off in the same/current parent drop off/pick up lane. For student safety, we ask that parents DO NOT use the lot by JEEP as students will still be required to go through the office. This lot was not designed as a drop off location and is a safety issue for our students and other drivers.

Community Facilities Committee - Note from Mr. Layne
We continue to make progress with the planning for a new school. The next community meeting will be held on January 16, at 6:30 P.M. in the Jerome High School Library. I hope you are able to add this important meeting to your calendar. At this meeting, LKV Architects will present a design concept. Starr Corporation, who will also be joining us, and LKV Architects will present projected costs. Eric Heringer with PiperJaffray will do a presentation on what this means for tax levies.
It is important that we have community input into the recommendation that will go to the Jerome School District Board of Trustees. I hope you are able to join us for the meeting and stay for the girls’ varsity basketball game against Twin Falls that evening at 7:30. Please feel free to invite other members of the community.

Sick Student? Should I keep them home?
Sometimes it is hard to know when to keep students home from school when they tell you they don't feel well. We love having students at school! However, it is important to help prevent the spread of cold and flu illnesses.
Please keep your child home if they are running a fever over 100.5 or they have diarrhea or vomiting in the last 24 hours. Please call 208-324-4841 to notify the school of your student's absence.
Reminder: Students will be outside for recess when it feels like 20 degrees and above. Please send a proper coat, hat, and gloves to school. January is typically a really cold month!
