News from the Principal
Our school year is quickly disappearing, and before you know it, summer will be here and we will begin registration for a new school year. With that being said, please make sure that we have your correct email in TxEIS which is our student database. Parents should be using TxEIS to access the parent portal to monitor your child's information, grades, and absences. We will use TxEIS for registration, so please contact the office if you are having any problems accessing the system.
If you have a child who has struggled this school year, you may be wondering if your child should be retained. While most of the research is against retention, sometimes there are valid reasons to retain. Retention needs to be discussed carefully as a committee consisting of the parents, teacher(s), administrators, and counselor. The counselor can administer a test to decide whether or not retention should be considered.
Light’s Retention Scale provides research-based, dependable guidance so that teachers, parents, and administrators can work together to justify making the difficult decision about whether to retain or promote a child.
It provides an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of grade retention for a given child because it is based upon the needs of the child in that specific setting.
If you have any questions, now is the time to have this conversation with your child's teacher in order to set up the committee process.
DRILLS: I know that watching the news daily is worrisome for parents as it is for me and my staff. Almost weekly, we are hearing about violence in our schools and communities. Being a mother and grandmother, it makes me sick to think that our young students have to be trained for lockdown drills, but it is something that we must practice. Each month, we practice fire drills and we are able to evacuate our building in about 1 minute and 20 seconds on the average. In addition, we practice bad weather drills so that we can quickly move students to the center of the building and away from outside windows. Many years ago, we also began training our students and staff for lockdown. Please know that we try not to scare our kids during this drill, but I am certain that some children are anxious about this. Please have some conversations at home with your child/children. It is not just about school, but anytime you are in public. You need to teach your child/children to be aware of their surroundings. If you see or hear anything which is out of the ordinary, please report it. We all have to be more aware of what is going on around us.
