CPA in Pensacola
Pensacola, city, the seat (1822) of Escambia county, northwestern Florida, U.S. It lies on Pensacola Bay (an arm of the Gulf of Mexico), about 35 miles (55 km) west of Fort Walton Beach and 60 miles (100 km) southeast of Mobile, Alabama. The bay's shoreline was the site of a Spanish settlement from 1559. However, it was abandoned two years afterward. The Spaniards officially took control in 1698 and constructed Fort San Carlos de Austria, but this was ravaged in the conflict between France and Spain from 1719-to 20. After the British took control in 1763, Pensacola (a name derived from Pansfalaya, which is a local Native American tribe) became the capital of West Florida. It was a refuge for loyalists during the American Revolution but in 1781 was taken by a Spanish army from Louisiana. In 1818 Gen. Andrew Jackson captured the city during the First Seminole War.
Pensacola was granted an official navy yard by the federal government after Florida was given over to the United States in 1821. It was also occupied by Confederates when they began the American Civil War, but Fort Pickens on Santa Rosa Island offshore remained in Union control. In 1862 the Confederates evacuated the city. Commercial fishing and lumbering increased following the war, and industry developed. The navy yard became an air station for the navy in 1914. The development of a large aviation training center there spurred the city's economic development.
The economic activity is dominated by tourism and the military. However, health care, high-tech industries, as well as manufacturing (fibers and chemicals papers, as well as construction materials) are significant components. Pensacola's deepwater, landlocked port has direct access to the Intracoastal Waterway. It also has direct access to the Gulf via a channel west of Santa Rosa Island. However, its regional importance is somewhat obscured by Mobile's vast port. Pensacola Junior College (now Pensacola State College) opened there in 1948, and the University of West Florida opened in 1967.
