the ability to be a producer, not just a consumer, of Knowledge.

I hope each of you enjoyed your break and had lots of time spent with the ones you love!!! We are looking forward to having our Raccoons back.
Below is a link to give your feedback for the 2020-2021 School Calendar. Each comment is carefully considered by the planning committee. Please take a moment to share your feedback.
As we move into the new year, we are examining our grading practices in 1st-4th. Our teachers are developing Rubrics that will align to the standards being taught and give you feedback on where your child in in relation to the standard. This will provide a more consistent and rigorous grading practice. You will begin to see rubrics coming home reflecting your child's growth on the standard. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions.
Thank you for entrusting us with your most precious gift!

Message from the Assistant Principal...
Hello Rice Families! As an assistant principal, I try to think of topics for each newsletter that would be most beneficial for you and your families. I am also a parent of a Rice Raccoon and a Cryar Cat. As parents, we always try to support our kids the best way we can at home. This means you need important information from our staff about your kiddo. I've put together a few pertinent questions that might help you along the way gather that info and how you can help at home. A positive school/home collaboration is the glue that holds it all together!
- What is my student's instructional and independent reading level? What do reading behaviors look like at this instructional level and how can I ask questions at home to support reading on this level? (Instructional level means they read and understand mostly on their own but make a few errors here and there....independent level should be read on their own without support)
- How can I support their number sense or fact fluency at home? (Math computation and number sense are foundational concepts that need practice when there are deficits. Our teachers have wonderful games/resources they can provide if your child is struggling in this area.)
- How is my child's behavior at the school? How can we create a system together that supports my student at school?
These are just a few of the basics! Feel free to call or email me anytime if there are any other areas that you would like to address and need to know how to ask your student's teacher!
Thanks for your continued support,
Melissa Sciba

Message From School Counselor...
Dear Parents,
We have an exciting month planned in our morning meetings. We will be talking about taking responsibility for your emotions and actions. Your child will take part in lessons each morning and also discussions on how to put this in action. I will be sending out a short video on our school Facebook page to share with you what we are learning.
We will be kicking off our Pennies for Patients Charity Drive. Each year I am amazed at how we come together to support students with cancer. Pennies for Patients connects schools with local blood cancer patients, provides tangible life skills to participants, and allows students to see the impact they’re making in the lives of others. Stay tuned for more information to come.
We continue to have great success with our Watch D.O.G.S. program. Thank you to everyone who signed up . If you were unable to sign up and would like to be a Watch D.O.G.S. volunteer, please contact the school. The kids enjoy it so much and look forward to seeing who is here each day. We would love to have you.
Thank you again for all you do!

· If you need to change transportation, please do so in writing.
· Read to your child and have your child read to you daily!
Kinder
Welcome back! We hope you enjoyed the winter break and made wonderful memories with your family. We will be reviewing all Kindergarten sight words this month. We will continue to reinforce appropriate reading strategies and behaviors during Reading Workshop. In writing we are learning how to tell and write stories about our experiences. In math we will continue working with numbers 0-20, reading, writing and representing them. In science we will discuss seasons, weather and objects in the sky. In social studies we will review good citizenship, create timelines and discuss the importance of Martin Luther King Jr. You can support your kindergartener by asking questions about their school day and what they learned in class.
Please make sure your child’s name is written inside their jacket, we have quite a few jackets with no names. Thank you for your continued support!

Lastly, in social studies we will be introducing units like new year’s celebrations around the world, influential people (Martin Luther King Jr.), measuring time, timelines, documents, and inventors (past & present). Here are a few reminders as well: homework packet is due on Thursday, return daily conduct folder every day, and wear tennis shoes on P.E. days. From the Nurse...
A few reminders from the clinic:
When your child is ill, please contact the school to let them know he or she won’t be attending that day. It is important to remember that schools must exclude students with certain illnesses for periods of time as identified in state rules. For example, if your child has a fever over 100 degrees, he or she must stay out of school until they are fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications.
In addition, students with diarrheal illnesses must stay home until he/she is diarrhea free without diarrhea-suppressing medications for at least 24 hours. Illness at school is evaluated by the health service staff in the clinic area. A child who demonstrates the following symptoms should be sent home from school.
· Fever of 100 degrees or more.
· Suspected contagious condition or disease.
· Vomiting or diarrhea.
· Severe stomachache, headache, or earache.
· A child who is too ill to function in the classroom.
A full list of conditions for which the school must exclude children can be obtained from the school nurse. Thank you for your help to keep our Rice Raccoon’s healthy!
