Herbal Clinic

Begins Tuesday, Jan 7

Greetings from Green Haven Living!

Happy 2014! This e-letter marks the first of what I plan to be a monthly, informative note that will provide you with useful tips for enhancing your sense of wellness through herbs and natural living. I'll start with an invitation to you to schedule a consultation with me at the student Herbal Clinic at the Maryland University of Integrative Health (formerly Tai Sophia Institute). Read on below for all the wonderful benefits of having a professional herbalist as part of your wellness team.

Why Herbs?

The current practice of herbalism in the United States focuses on supporting wellness as opposed to fighting disease. Many herbalists believe the strength of botanicals lies in their capacity to support the body as it finds a healing path. In other words, herbs assist the body by “nudging” it back into balance, thereby helping the body help itself to heal. Common issues that herbs can help with include: stress management, allergy relief, difficulty sleeping, weakened immunity, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, emotional imbalances, inflammation and pain, lowered vitality, autoimmune complications, toxicity, infection, organ damage or malfunction, and more. Even if you don't currently have any health conditions of concern, many herbs provide tonifying (i.e., preventive) support to maintain and even enhance your overall wellness.

Why see an Herbalist?

While there has been an increase in the distribution of off-the-shelf herbal products, the assistance of a professional can help you make wise choices and better understand herbal use. An experienced herbalist will ensure the herbs used are of consistent quality and are appropriate for you. Concerns you may have regarding possible interactions with pharmaceutical medications are also addressed.

What to expect in the Herbal Clinic

You will begin your partnership with me and the Clinic Supervisor with a comprehensive, 2 hour consultation in which we will review all aspects of your life and current state of health. We will discuss any concerns you may have and begin to explore some short and long term goals. Upon completion of the first consultation you will have some initial suggestions for dietary and/or lifestyle enhancements as well as an herbal formulation (or two) custom blended for your specific needs. You will be able to purchase your herbs at the Herbal Dispensary located in the Clinic. Generally, a follow-up consultation will be scheduled a few weeks later to monitor progress and/or modify the herbal formulation as necessary.
