Studies this Week
- Skills: Explain how specific aspics of a text's illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the word in the story (e.g. create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting).
- Phonics: ou, ow, oi, oy
- Vocabulary: prefix un- (means not) and suffix -ly (means in a _____ way)
Spelling
- Practice spelling and writing words. Visit spellingcity.com/meverette for more practice.
- Words this week: proud, shower hour, amount, voyage, choice, avoid, thousand, prowl, employ, bounce, poison, annoy, appoint, broil, however, mountain, coward, turmoil, chowder
Math
- Perimeter & Area - we are beginning Unit 4 on perimeter (the distance around) and area (the surface amount).
- Facts - we are working on basic facts. Students should already know addition and subtraction facts to 20 quickly.
Vocabulary
Vocabulary on our reading test will be words with un- and -ly prefix and suffix. They will be used in context and students must determine what the word means. For example: She happily unwrapped the big present. Happily means: _____________________
Writing
We are working on opinion papers still. Students are very reluctant to write more than a sentence at a time. We are working on stamina.

- Nouns, Verbs, and Pronouns (review from last week)
- Adjectives and Adverbs
- Adjectives describe a noun (green, large, sparkly)
- Adverbs describe a verb (slowly, sadly, hurriedly)

- Weather - tools, types, clouds

Practice at Home
When reading with your child and he/she comes to an unknown
word, ask the following:
- What do the illustrations tell you about the mood of this book? Where in the story is the mood described?
- How do the illustrations help you understand the mood?
- Explain how the illustration helps the reader understand the setting of the story. Use examples from the text and illustration.
