Meng's Memos
February 12th, 2016
Thank you to everyone who came to our poetry night!
Mrs. Roth's students showed us what biography presentations look like. This made us excited for our biography unit that is coming up!
Our Focus this Week
What We are Learning This Week
· Writing Workshop: We will be reviewing persuasive writing, as we work to persuade each other which version of the Three Little Pigs story is the best.
· Reading Workshop: We will wrap up our study of folktales with fables, tall tales, and myths. Our focus will be on classifying the stories and looking for moral/theme.
· Spelling: Contractions (examples: can't, wouldn't)
· Math Workshop: Time - telling time to the minute, time conversions (minutes to hours, hours to days, etc.), and elapsed time.. If you would like to follow our learning in your Envision math books at home, we will be covering these lessons... Monday (No School), Tuesday (No School), Wednesday (12-5), Thursday (practice for test), and Friday (time check/test). For problem-solving please look at 9-8 & 10-9.
· Social Studies: We will start looking at the history of our community, and we will work on a map skill: map key.
Homework Ideas
Math: We have been working on improving our skills as test takers. As we explore the genre of test-taking, we will take a check over our time math unit on Friday. On Thursday, students will bring home a practice test for students to practice their time skills before our Friday check. Please look over this practice check with your child, talking about test-taking skills.
Reading: When you ask your child questions about his/her book, please ask your child to answer using evidence from the text. This is an important test-taking skill!

What's Going on Here at Cumberland Road Elementary School?
One Book, One School
“So let us wage a global struggle against illiteracy, poverty and terrorism and let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world. Education is the only solution. Education First.” Malala Yousafzai.
While one book changing the world is a tall order, we hope one book can change our school for the better. CRES students, staff, and families will be embarking on a journey with “Dear Malala, We Stand with You” by Rosemary McCarty as our jumping off point. One book, One school. We will come together around this book to discover, discuss, and honor our heroes. Every student at CRES will begin this journey on February 26th. Thanks to our amazing Librarian, Kristin Hicks, every single staff member has a copy of the book to use in all parts of the curriculum over the coming months. We will have a culminating event and closure in May.
We know heroes come in many shades, shapes, and sizes. Heroes do not always fly or wear capes, they do not always fight with strength of body or personal wealth. Malala Yousafzai is a hero to countless people across the globe for her efforts to go to school and secure schooling for other young girls. We cannot wait to enrich the lives and learning of the children, families, and staff here at CRES as we honor Malala’s struggle and discover what makes a hero.
