Technology/Social Media Tip
Google Hangouts
Google Hangouts is a collaborative tool that allows your child to participate in group text and video chats with up to 10 users. Google Hangouts is a powerful tool for group projects and collaborating in the learning environment. At the same time, tweens and teens need guidance in how to use this tool effectively.
Here are some tips for helping your child manage their use of Google Hangouts at home:
- Remind your child that Google Hangouts is a collaboration tool and encourage him/her to use it for learning purposes only.
- Remind your child to keep posts and activities in Google Hangouts positive and professional, as this is part of a digital footprint. This includes text comments as well as links and images shared.
- Tell your child to only chat with students known face-to-face.
- Keep the use of the computer in a central location at home, so that you can engage with your child during computer use and monitor interactions.
Safety
On November 5th, we lose an hour and it will be darker earlier in the afternoon. With shorter days this time of year, motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians need to be extra alert to see each other in low light situations.
Improving visibility means improving safety for all road users. Wearing light colors or reflective clothing is one of the simplest things pedestrians and cyclists can to do keep themselves safe.
Here are additional suggestions to help keep you safe while walking and biking:
- Wear bright, reflective clothing and shoes when walking or biking.
- Don’t wear headphones, text or talk on a cell phone while crossing the street.
- Be aware of vehicles around you. Make eye contact before crossing in front of vehicles.
- Don’t assume that cars see you or are going to stop.
- Driving or biking? Expect and slow down for pedestrians in popular walking areas, around schools and parks, and near crosswalks.
Chromebook Parent Announcement
Chromebooks are an important part of our learning community at Stoller. It is important that our students have working Chromebooks to be successful. We are reminding students that they are responsible for any damage done to their Chromebooks in our weekly student announcements. We are encouraging the following to help keep Chromebooks working properly:
- Use it only for schoolwork.
- Keep it in its case when not using for schoolwork.
- Keep it closed and in its case while walking through the hall.
- Do not let other students use your Chromebook.
- Do not use your device during lunch, except in the library to do homework.
Some students are intentionally damaging their device knowing that they have a “free” repair. Please speak with your child to let them know that this is not an appropriate use of the insurance policy. Remember that second incidents of damage are a $150.00 repair fee. Chromebooks are not toys, they are learning tools; please encourage your child to take ownership over the care of his or her learning tool.

AMC 8
The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment. The contest date is on Tuesday, November 14th, first period of the day (9:15am).
Stoller has a limited number of slots available for students to officially take the exam. If a student is interested, he or she should contact their current Math teacher. The teacher will, in turn, give them a practice test. If the student's score is above the cutoff, the student can then take the official exam. Even if the student's score do not reach the cutoff, the student can still take the exam - just not officially.
