Widefield School District 3 ~ March 17, 2017
Community Legends
Russ and Irene have been involved with the school district since the early 80s when their sons Kent and Kevin started school. Irene volunteered at King Elementary before serving 15 years as an educational assistant at Sunrise Elementary. During that time, Irene introduced the Japanese culture to students who enjoyed learning about where she came from and the Japanese traditions. After retiring, Irene spent another 15 years subbing across the district and says she enjoyed every minute of it.
The couple has served on a number of committees including the credit union’s supervisory, BAAC, DAAC, long range planning, Fountain Valley Scholars, Friends of the Library, Parks and Recreation, and Bike Club at King Elementary.
Russ also volunteered in the classroom. He gave presentations on birds and insects at King Elementary, and shared interviewing and job search tips for career day at Sproul Junior High. Russ says one of his favorite volunteering events was being a storyteller for the community tree lighting. After six years, he has memorized “The Night Before Christmas.”
Outside the school district, Irene volunteered at Venetucci Farm preparing produce for the market every year. Russ worked at Safeway for 42 years.
In his last roll as a checker, Irene referred to Russ’s lane as the “checkout ministry” because everyone would ask Russ for advice or tell him stories about their life.
The Lamberts are also very involved in their church helping with a number of events and activities. The two have been singing in the choir for 44 years, despite not knowing how to read music.
Russ and Irene credit this community with helping to raise two wonderful children who have thanked them repeatedly for providing a diverse and compassionate place to grow and learn.
The two are moving to Longmont next month to live closer to their son and granddaughter.
Star Partner of the Year Award
The district received the Blue Star Recyclers “Star Partner of the Year Award” for demonstrating our commitment to ethical recycling. The district’s warehouse uses Blue Star to recycle computers and electronics. Bruce Brown, Curtis Ross and Erik Jablonski accepted the award at a luncheon on March 15 and were recognized at the board of education meeting Thursday night.
