Day 5: summer robotics at OV
New! On Fridays during the Summer Recreation Program
Are they toys? Are they robots? Look what I can do!
New this year is a free robotics camp happening every Friday during the Summer Recreation Program, from 8 am to 1 pm at Otselic Valley Central School.
Mrs. Ross and other teachers have acquired a collection of robotic toys and kits--with more on the way--appropriate for kids who have completed kindergarten through 6th grade.
Each day's events will be geared to the number and ages of children who attend, and they have options to work in pairs and teams to build, play, and experiment.
Robotics play teaches problem solving, cause and effect, connections, and the science (and play!) of mechanics and motion. Basic coding skills will also be taught as part of some of these projects.
Students who develop basic understanding of robotics and coding can become creators, not just consumers of technology. They acquire 21st century skills that can be used anywhere. Most of all, it's fun!
WHO IS IT FOR?
Both girls and boys who have completed Kindergarten through 6th grade.
WHERE AND WHEN?
Every Friday during the Summer Rec Program, from 8 am to 1 pm: July 1, July 8, July 15, July 22, and July 29.
WHAT'S THE COST?
It's free. OV owns some of the smaller robots, and we are borrowing the enhanced Legos kits from DCMO BOCES.
IS THERE ANYTHING EXTRA?
Breakfast and lunch will be served to students because OV has a Summer Food Service Program. The menu is here: http://bit.ly/28PuOiU
WHY IS IT CALLED DAY 5?
This program is held on the 5th day of the week during the Summer Rec Program.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
Sign up on your Summer Rec Program sheet that went home with students. Look for "**My children will participate in the Day 5 robotics innovation camp on Fridays: Yes _ No _ **.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?
The program will be adapted according to the ages and numbers of children who participate. The videos below show some of the companies whose kits and robots we'll be using. We may not have every product in every video below, but you get the idea.
