Principal's Letter
Dear Lake Windward Families,
We have really had a great two weeks! Students and teachers have worked to build community in their classrooms as well as get to know and understand routines and procedures at LWE. Our "Start With Hello" campaign has been a fun way to encourage students to get to know others and has given them the tools to strike up conversations with peers they aren't already well acquainted with.
I have been busy visiting classrooms, meeting our new students, welcoming our returning students, and reading the book Giraffes Can't Dance. This book has opened the door for some great conversations about accepting each other's differences, encouraging one another, and not giving up. I've been so impressed by how deeply our students have been thinking and reflecting on these topics when I have visited with them.
As you are probably aware, the number of Covid-19 cases has risen in our community which is impacting our school as well. Please be sure to watch your child for ANY symptoms of illness and keep them at home if they are presenting with symptoms that are not typical. Even a runny nose or slightly sore throat can be symptoms of infection. We need your help with keeping your symptomatic children at home, and reporting illness to the Covid-19 parent reporting portal.
As the SEAT process (aka 10 Day Count process) concludes, we are not expecting any changes to our homeroom teacher allocations. Although our numbers in first grade are lower than projected, our district leaders are giving us some grace and letting us keep all current homeroom positions.
Our virtual curriculum nights are coming up this week! See below for more information. Our teachers will be recording their live sessions in case there are parents who have a conflict. Please be on the lookout from your child's homeroom teacher for a link to their curriculum night meeting.
As always, I feel blessed to be a part of this wonderful school community. It is a pleasure to work with each of you as we strive to provide the very best school environment for our LWE students!
Warm regards,
Julie Morris

Counseling Department Partner- Chris 180
Chris 180 is proud to be in partnership with Lake Windward ES to provide support to students and staff. Some of the issues we can help with are trauma, anxiety, depression, anger outbursts, self-esteem, peer relationships, suicidal thoughts, and many others.
Counseling services can be a positive support to all students with a wide range of needs. Over time, these services can help students:
• Cope with their feelings which should lead to fewer calls home
• Understand why they are having difficulty and learn better ways of
responding
• Improve focus in the classroom
• Maintain better relationships with family, friends, and school staff
LWE's identified Chris 180 therapist is Ms. Zaqayvia Johnson. Ms. Johnson has a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Fort Valley State University and is currently in the process of working to become a Licensed Associate Professional Counselor. Ms. Johnson is passionate about education, trauma informed spaces for adolescents, and social and emotional expression. She will be working at LWE on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
