Mrs. Baker's Class Newsletter
March 8, 2018
What is going on?
Reading: This week we will dive into the dictionary; learning how to find the meaning of unknown words and determining which definition is correct for multiple meaning words.
Writing: Students will choose a topic that they consider themselves an expert in , then write a procedural paper based on that topic. They will sequence instructions, use transition words, clear details, and diagrams.
Spelling and Grammar:
Spelling words this week (after spring break): call, far, head, most, red, suddenly, thing, want
This week we will learn about adverbs and how they are used to support a verb.
Science: Our focus will switch from the nighttime sky to the daytime sky. We will observe (without directly looking) the position of the sun in the sky at different times of the day, and how that affects our shadows. We will also notice that the moon can be observed during the day, and how the position of the sun affects the part of the moon we see. Please continue your moon phase homework pages and be ready to turn them in after spring break.
Math: Coming back from Spring Break, students will dive into learning all about money for two weeks. We will review each coins value, learn how to add coin values together, and how to write money correctly 3 different ways. Students word problems will involve money value and addition/subtraction of values.
Tomorrow is field day- please have kids wear their class t-shirt if they did not get a field day shirt. Please wear comfortable shoes.
After Spring Break we will begin a money unit. We have found that plastic/school money is not quite as good as the real thing when practicing money counting skills. We would like to use real coins (pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters) for math this year. Please gather approximately 20 pennies, 10 dimes, 20 nickels and 4 quarters to send to school. We will use these coins for the rest of the year for money practice and will send them home at the end of the school year. Please send the coins to school by Friday March 9th. Please send money in a ziplock or container labeled with your child’s name.
We have started Genius hour- our kids have been rolling around what they want their project to be on.
If you are an expert or know a lot about a topic. We would like you to come in and speak to our class.
We would like to set something up! Please come! Our kids love to have you in our class. You can nominate Grandparents too! Don't be scared!
This and that...
Calendar:
March 12-16: Spring Break
April 4- Field Trip to Austin Zoo (information to come)
May 29: Last Student Day (*Note change* Due to Bad weather make up)
Please send me an email if you object to our homeroom mom having your email address for the remainder of the year for communication purposes. The Remind app has caused some confusion, and we don't have all of our parents signed up to get information.
If I don't hear back from you in the next 3 days, then I will send Skye and Shayna your email address.
