Mariner Memo
Week of May 4 - May 8, 2020
This Week at Marine City Middle School...
This week marked the third week of the distance learning program for our school and district. I hope that everyone is finding the right balance between school and life and is finding a time each day to get outside and enjoy the beautiful spring that we are having. I know the temps have been up and down, but we have had a lot of sun this spring and that is a win as far as I'm concerned.
As we progress through May, approaching the end of our school year, it is important to keep in mind that while much of what we typically do at this time of the year has been cancelled, some other things still remain to be done. Scheduling of courses is one of those items. At this point, we have no idea about what the future will hold, when businesses will re-open their doors, when state restrictions will be lifted, and what the start of the 2020-2021 school year will look like. All we can do at this point is to continue to be positive, prepare as much as possible, and be flexible and understanding of changes that must be made.
This week we celebrated our staff with Teacher Appreciation Week. With everything that has changed in the past 6 weeks it is easy to have let this important week slip by forgotten. I would like to thank all of the parents reading this for the teaching role that they've taken on. I know that you will join in saying that the work teachers do everyday is incredibly difficult and important for our children. I encourage you to reach out to your children's teachers with a note of appreciation. Sometimes, it is the simplest of words and notes that has the most profound effect in the hearts and minds of educators.
Have a great weekend everyone, thanks for reading. Stay safe and MARINER STRONG!

Marine City Middle School Welcomes the Class of 2027
Next week, the scheduling process will begin for the 2020-2021 school year's incoming class of 6th grade students. Marine City Middle School is excited to welcome in our new class from Palms and Belle River Elementary Schools
On Monday, May 11th, Mr. Ming will send an email to all parents of current 5th grade students for scheduling for next school year. We are asking that all parents complete this quick Google Form WITH their student and submit it by 3pm on Friday, May 15th.
The biggest choice that 6th grade students have, reflected on the scheduling form that will go out, is the choice of elective path. Students will have the option of pursuing BAND, CHOIR, or the EXPLORATORY SERIES. In preparation for that decision Mrs. Fox, middle school band director, and Mr. Van Dyke, middle school choir director, have prepared introduction letters for parents and students to read over.
The scheduling process takes a long time and we expect it to take a bit longer this year due to our current situation. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for filling out our forms next week.

This Week in the Positivity Project...
Next week our P2 learning takes us in a new direction, toward closing out the theme of the Positivity Project and positive psychology in general, OTHER PEOPLE MATTER. Relationships are powerful and are increasingly more important with each passing week of the pandemic crisis that we now find ourselves in. During this whole scary situation, it is relationships that have blossomed. In the face of polarizing politics and increasing loneliness and anxiety it is the power of positive relationships and OTHER PEOPLE MATTER that has provided us a guiding light.
As we focus on the OTHER PEOPLE MATTER mindset again this week, I encourage everyone to take 15 minutes to review the slides that are available here to better understand the value of positive psychology and the power that it can have in our lives. It is easy to let some of the difficulties of this moment creep into our minds, but it is the power of relationships and the value of OTHER PEOPLE MATTER that will bring us back up.
