PRINCIPAL MESSAGE

Dear Arleta Families & Caregivers,

Have you noticed a few additions to our playground? They are small(ish) but meaningful! Our Arleta Kindergarten Teachers are part of a district-supported team called Kindergarten Innovation Cohort that has the goal of exploring how to integrate culturally sustaining and developmentally appropriate practices, guided play, and rigorous academic learning standards within the Kindergarten day. Each school’s team chose their own question, and ours is “How can we incorporate nature, build resiliency, and connect play to rigorous learning throughout the day?” So far, Ms. Annie and Ms. Hedlund have brought some innovation to students’ experiences by adding pebbles to the rock ring just north of the play structure, and they’re in process acquiring and placing tree trunk rounds between the trees on the north end of the field. (Thank you so much to all the awesome parents who came to help rake the pebbles into place in the rain last Friday afternoon!)

Here are some slides Ms. Annie’s students created to introduce the purpose and expectations for the pebbles to the other grades. And, photos Ms. Hedlund and Ms. Annie brought to their Kindergarten Cohort meeting this week where the district teams were all exploring the question “How are students engaging in developmentally appropriate, academically rigorous thinking and learning?” I hope you’re as inspired as we were by the amount of development and learning while a child is at play… unstructured play such as recess play (the recess photo) as well as play that has been intentionally designed and scaffolded (the classroom photo). The Kindergarten literacy unit right now is "Once Upon A Farm" and Three Billy Goats Gruff is one of the stories. In the second picture, students were sequencing story events and retelling the story using simple but intentionally chosen objects.

Hope you have a play-filled weekend!

Lisa

UPDATED! HELP US HIT $10,000 FOR DOLPHIN DASH

Thank you Dolphin Dash supporters! Can we make it to $10,000?!? Let's keep the momentum going and raise even more for our beloved school!

Haven't heard about the Dolphin Dash? Read more about it below, and check out the website: https://app.99pledges.com/fund/arletaschool

Big picture

We are excited to introduce the Dolphin Dash to our school community! The Dolphin Dash is going to be our school’s major fundraiser this year, so we need caregivers & friends of our school to get involved and support our students!

What is the Dolphin Dash? The Dolphin Dash is a new event this year, similar to a Fun Run or Jog-a-thon, and students will participate on Friday, March 24th. We’re asking families, friends, and neighbors to support students with a donation and encouragement to do their best in the event. Each lap will be tallied as students jog, walk, skip, run, etc. during their set time period, and we are challenging students to complete 1,200 laps for the whole school. All students will have a chance to participate and all students will celebrate the success of the event with a treat and a prize.

Why are we having a Dolphin Dash? School funding doesn’t cover much for art or PE, so our PTA is hoping this fundraiser can make up some of that gap. Fundraising for this event will focus on enriching experiences in art and PE. Our goal is to raise at least $5,000, and ANY donation is welcome!

How do we raise money? We’re asking for students and their caregivers to request one-time donations from family and friends in support of giving it their all on the day of the Dolphin Dash. We have an easy-to-use website that accepts credit cards, or we can accept cash or checks. Please help your student(s) collect pledges through their webpage. You can email or text the link to family, relatives, friends, co-workers, etc. for support. Posting on social media is another great option! One way we can meet our school goal of $5,000 is if each student raises $20. Fundraising is completely optional!

Online pledges with 99Pledges. Your student already has a page set up to collect pledges. Simply go to https://app.99pledges.com/fund/arletaschool and enter your student’s first name in the ‘search for participant’ field. You do not need to login or change anything. Simply make a donation for whatever you can, and share your student's link with friends and family. We are shooting for 100% participation, so no amount is too small.

PPS LANGUAGE SERVICES & COMMUNITY AGENTS AVAILABLE

PPS Multilingual Community Agents (CAs) are bridgers of communication and builders of relationships. We aim to facilitate communication between school staff and multilingual families, encourage collaboration between educators and parents/guardians, and to support engagement efforts through brokering an authentic, cultural exchange. Our goal is to inspire the Graduate Portrait in every student, and help educators and parents/guardians be effective partners in their student’s education. Community Agents support Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese and Arabic speaking families. In addition, PPS Language Services support Russian and Soomaali.

Are you or someone you know passionate about serving our community? PPS is hiring Community Agents for Somali and Spanish. Apply online at pps.net/jobs using keywords "Somali Community Agent" or "Spanish Community Agent", or email a resume and cover letter to cateam@pps.net

STUDENT HEALTH CENTER APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE

In an effort to help families help their children get and stay healthy, we are reminding Franklin feeder-school families that they can easily get Well-Child appointments at Franklin Student Health. Located at Franklin High School, the Franklin Student Health Center is like having a doctor's office in school that students can visit any time during the school day. We offer easily accessible primary and mental health care services by appointment for all Multnomah County youth ages 5-19, including exams, labs and prescriptions. Youth don't have to attend the school where the center is located. We will see families with or without insurance and there is never an out-of-pocket cost. For a full list of our services visit multco.us/student-health.
