ConVal High School Happenings - June 3, 2022
Message From Principal McKillop
We kicked off the week on Tuesday with a Spring Festival right here on our ConVal campus. Towards the end of the day, students were able to pick up their yearbooks and participate in a variety of activities. Thanks to our amazing parent volunteers, there were many treats available to our students as well. Please see a story below with a few pictures from the event.
I want to again thank the students, parents, and staff that reached early Wednesday morning regarding a potential threat to our school. As Dr. Rizzo Saunders shared recently, the Peterborough Police Department is investigating this post and working to find where the account originated. There are no new updates at this time. However, law enforcement has reassured us that, based on what they currently know, they do not believe this threat to be credible. We will always take safety concerns seriously and encourage anyone who sees or hears something concerning to please report it to administration.
Today was the last day of classes for our seniors. We are excited to celebrate our soon-to-be graduates one week from tonight, Friday, June 10, at 6:00 pm. I sent out a reminder email yesterday that includes our alternative graduation dates and times, in case there is rain on the evening of June 10. The rain dates are also listed on the senior schedule below.
Best of luck to our two teams who are continuing on to tournament play! Our softball and boy's lacrosse teams will compete on the road tomorrow to participate in the quarter-final rounds of their respective tournaments. Please be sure to read the Athletic and Co-Curriucluar updates below with other exciting news. The table of contents below is also a helpful reference as you navigate the newsletter.
Have a wonderful weekend, and GO COUGARS!
Best,
Heather

Snapshots of the week
Mrs. Smith's English 10 Honors Class
On Wednesday, students in Mrs. Courtney Smith's Block 1 English 10 Honors class were introduced to a writing assignment based on the This I Believe project. This I Believe is an international organization engaging people in writing and sharing essays describing the core values that guide their daily lives, and is based on the popular 1950s radio series of the same name hosted by Edward R. Murrow. The writing assignment required Mrs. Smith’s students to write in the first person and include information to help support and share their beliefs about a social injustice or topic that is important to them today.
German Students Perform "Grease" - in German!
Students of German demonstrated self-directed, independent learning in the production of Grease, the musical. As German teacher Cindi Hodgdon explained, students chose which music to perform, watched the original English version, then translated the dialogue and song lyrics into German themselves. They then learned the texts, blocked the play, procured the props, choreographed the dances, and rehearsed the numbers — initially, on their own with a substitute because Frau Hodgdon was out with COVID.
“The performance itself was a genuine ensemble production,” Frau Hodgdon said. “We had one German 3 student, one previous (last year) German 4 student, and the booth was managed by two German 3 students. Everyone else, 14 students, were AP-level students.”
“Grease was the culmination of five semesters of German together,” Frau Hodgdon added. “I am always so proud of how the students come together to form a tight-knit group that is thrilled with their achievements, and feels like a family. They really do go together like ‘rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong.’ This year was no exception, and I am so amazed by them!”
Mr. O'Brien's Eastern World Heritage Class
In Mr. O'Brien's Eastern World Heritage classes, this pyramid of boxes was created collaboratively by students to illustrate how the British created a colonial empire.
Art Classes
Students in art classes prepared for their final art presentations. They presented information on their favorite artists, course accomplishments and growth, along with their future goals.
Applied Technology Center (ATC) Programs: Entrepreneurship Trade Show
Students in Deb Coyne’s Entrepreneurship and Small Business Ownership class held an Entrepreneurship Trade Show in the cafeteria on Wednesday, June 1.
The trade show highlighted the culminating projects of the entrepreneurship students. Their task was to create a complete business and present it to the public.
“I am continuously fascinated by the creativity of my business students,” said Deb Coyne at the event. “The variety of proposals and plans, from niche products to potential businesses with mass appeal, shows that students can be successful as entrepreneurs and definitely have acquired the requisite knowledge to get these ideas funded.” It will be wonderful to see some of the students realizing their business ambitions in the future!
Spring Festival Engages Students
The ConVal Spring Festival on May 31 brought a wide array of activity options for students, from a quiet space for reading a drawing, chess, board games, and making cards for hospitalized children to playing corn hole, jam frisbee, kickball, “Just Dance” rhythm games, four square games in the bus lane, and flag football on the JV field. There were also trivia competitions in the gazebo, Dungeons & Dragons, “Minute to Win It”-style games, German games as well as opportunities for artwork, from elaborate face paintings to arts and crafts on the sidewalk. The ConVal Spring Festival is organized annually around the release of the ConVal Yearbook which took place in the ConVal cafeteria where students picked up their copies and signed each other’s yearbooks.

Mud Volleyball
The annual, end of the year Mud Volleyball Event, hosted by the Student Council, took place on Tuesday, May 31st starting at 2:20 pm with 17 teams participating and Amanda Hinton volunteering to referee the games. This event followed the Spring Fest events hosted by the NHS.
Students and staff were able to form themed teams of 6 players to participate in this afterschool event. The outdoor volleyball court was rototilled, and then flooded by the Peterborough Fire Department to create the perfect Mud Volleyball court for the event. Kona Ice, water coolers, sunshine, and a great crowd created the perfect atmosphere for a truly great, muddy time.
The "Mud Buds" placed first and "BDE" placed second in the single elimination tournament style event. Congratulations to both teams on this success!
The "Mud Buds" — Captain: Malachi Page, Jake Daniels, Fletcher Maggs, Zach Burgess, Dan McCall, and Wyatt Beaulieu.
Team "BDE" (Bryson Defeats Everyone) — Captain: Austin Klonel, Garret Rousseau, Bennett Saxe, Ethan Kinney, Addison Dodge, and Caleb Norford.
A HUGE THANK YOU TO EVERY TEAM, PLAYER, AND HELPER THAT MADE THIS EVENT SO SUCCESSFUL!
