A Message from the Superintendent
You can place it on your calendar every year. In education, the month of October is one of the more difficult months of the school year. The excitement of the new school year has worn off and we are all exhausted from the crazy schedules and tasks that we have to complete.
It’s also a time when students contemplate giving up or quitting activities they are involved in. Something that has bothered me about my generation is how easy we quit when circumstances become difficult. We quit our jobs, families and other commitments for numerous reasons.
If we teach our kids anything in Spring Hill, I hope that we are able to teach them about commitment, hard work and completing what they start. When our students understand these principles, they will become much more effective in solving equations within the classroom. The struggles our students face now are nothing compared to the struggles life will challenge them with once they leave our campuses. I also believe that once you begin giving up, it becomes easier to do the next time.
All I ask is that when our children contemplate this illness within our society of quitting that we use it as an opportunity to teach them about commitment and pride.

Wayne Guidry
Employment in East Texas
As young as kindergarten we begin asking our children the infamous question: What would you like to become when you grow up? This is a great question and I have also used the phrase with my own children.
However, I believe there is a significant piece of information we are missing in our conversations with our children when we talk about their careers. The question is simply: Is there a demand for the profession within a hundred miles of where I would like to live? Over the years I have seen students graduate college only to discover there is no demand for their field of study.
The link below includes a spreadsheet from the Texas Workforce Commission concerning the demand for jobs within East Texas. This is a great tool to learn the number of annual job openings in each profession, the average annual salary and the percentage in which the demand is growing or declining. You can also search different regions within Texas for this same information.
As we have these conversations with our children, I hope this information helps put into proper perspective the job market our students will one day be entering. I would hate for one of our students to graduate only to discover they have to move to Iceland to find a job.
This year we created a career investigations class within our junior high. In this course we are exposing our students to multiple careers. We are also exposing the students to the different pathways of study we offer at our high school. We hope that by the end of the course both parents and students will have enough information to create their high school four year plan that is required by state law.

District Security Upgrades Update
I just want to start out with a big Thank You to all at Spring Hill ISD for the help, support and patience throughout this entire process. We started planning for this project over a year ago! Today we have all cameras and door access installed. We are currently working through the details on camera locations and making sure they are looking in the right direction. We have also entered the software installation phase. Panasonic has developed a new package for analytics and they came by Wednesday to demonstrate the new capabilities. Three of the representatives came from Japan to show us these new features.
Original:
Intelligent Video Motion Detection
Intruder Detection
Loitering Detection
Direction Detection
Scene Change Detection
Object Detection
Cross Line Detection
Advanced Auto Tracking
Face Recognition System
New:
Vehicle Search (analytics for vehicle search - filter by color, direction, type, date and time)
People search (clothing color, body type, backpack etc)
Also, not every camera we have is capable of analytics. We will have about 150 cameras that will be able to perform analytics. We have 12 cameras that will be used for facial recognition. For the facial recognition cameras we can put in pictures of people that are banned from entering our schools. Should they try, we will be notified and appropriate action taken.
Our new door access system has given us the ability to schedule door locking and unlocking. We can also schedule doors to be open for events, but we need advance notice from the campus principal if you need that. The best feature of our door access is we now have the ability to lock the entire district down with the click of a button.

SHISD Joins Governor Greg Abbott in Celebrating National Principals Month
Principals are a vital part of our children's educations as they set the academic tone for their schools by working collaboratively with teachers to build high academic standards, set performance goals, and utilize best practices for achieving those goals.
At this time, I encourage Texans to learn more about the contributions of elementary, middle, and high school principals and the roles they play in ensuring every child has access to a high quality education in a safe, supportive environment.
First Lady Cecilia Abbott joins me in wishing you the best.

Blue Brigade Brings Home a First Division Rating in UIL Marching Contest
"What is more impressive than the first division rating that the Blue Brigade received today at marching contest? The way these young men and women handled the complete and utter uncertainty of the future of the Blue Brigade Band over the past five months. After watching the band perform I couldn't help but think about how uncertain everything about the Blue Brigade was this summer. This performance shows the true character of our students and the leadership within the Blue Brigade Band". Wayne Guidry, Superintendent

Pre-K Classes Visit Ellis Pottery's Pumpkin Patch
This year, Spring Hill started full day PreK. In the past years, the Pre-K program was only half day. Currently there are 60 students enrolled in the full day program. It is so exciting to have these students all day! One of the advantages of having these students full day is that we are not rushed to fit everything into a half day! All day also allows more time for field trips!
The Pre-K classes took a field trip to Ellis Pottery to decorate their own pumpkins, have storytime, and see the pumpkin patch. The students had a great time decorating their pumpkins and enjoying this hands on experience. The students were even joined by Spring Hill Superintendent, Dr. Wayne Guidry! Dr. Guidry helped students decorate their pumpkins. What a great surprise for these classes to see the “boss” of Spring Hill helping them with their pumpkins! Deanna Turner, Spring Hill Primary Principal even got to stop by and see all of the fun! A teacher can always read a story about a subject but it is a whole other learning experience to get to actually experience it first hand!
We want to expose our students to all kinds of learning! This was just one of the field trips that Pre-K will experience this year. They will also visit the local fire station and go to a music production. We had many wonderful parents who went on the field trip. We encourage our Pre-K parents to be involved in their child’s education as part of our Family Engagement Plan. We are looking forward to a fantastic year with full day PreK!! ~ Deanna Turner
