Lion Pride News for our FOCUS Families!
Principal's Message
Greetings Families,
The year 2022 is coming to a close and another chapter in our focus family story will end, however a 2023 sequel will begin! We can't wait to begin writing a new 2023 story with all of you!
Now is a great time to reflect on our greatest accomplishments. Most importantly we treasure the relationships we've made between home and school to continue to build happy successful leaders and learners.
DRUM ROLL..........
In November, the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) released state test scores for the 2021-22 school year. You may hear it referred to as “NSCAS,” or the Nebraska Student Centered Assessment System.
NDE classifies schools across our state from “Needs Improvement” to “Excellent.” State test scores, student academic growth, English language proficiency and attendance in the school determine each school’s classification.Wilson Focus received classification of Excellent! Very few schools receive this classification. We are so proud of all the hard work of our students, families, and staff.
Your family has received information about your child’s individual performance. If you have questions, please contact your student’s teacher(s). We encourage all families to regularly review Measures of Academic Progress, or MAP data. MAP is a test that students take more frequently – with data available immediately. It is a proven source of information about your student’s current strengths and opportunities in the classroom.
Student data has always guided our instruction. We are constantly working to build on our instruction and improve outcomes for all students.
We look forward to beginning our new year together with all of you when we return to school on Wednesday, January 4, 2023.
Mrs. Jacobs

HOUR OF CODE
In December, Wilson Focus students are participating in Hour of Code with Mr. Nabity, our Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Facilitator and the OPS Apple Tech-Trainers, Dr. Feldmann and Mr. Jensen. Hour of Code is a world-wide dedication to fully developing an understanding of the basic concepts of computer science. During the Hour of Code, students will code on code.org and program Micro:bits (a pocket-sized computer) in the app on the iPad. Students will also be coding Spheros through the SpheroEdu App. A Sphero is a robot that is equipped with sensors, including light sensors, that can be programmed to complete a variety of tasks. To learn more about coding, go to code.org and to see some of the coding that took place across the district and at Wilson Focus follow the hashtag #OPSCode on Twitter.
Attendance Matters-- Attend, Aspire, Graduate
Strive for 95 is a district wide focus and effort to increase the number of students reaching 95% attendance or higher (missing 9 or less days per year). Attendance goals are recognized weekly and monthly with incentives. Students who missed less than 2 days of school during first quarter received a Strive for 95 certificate at conferences. Students who miss 2 days or more a month of school are considered CHRONICALLY absent. On average it takes 3 days for students to catch up for every one day of being absent.
Please make sure to call the school at (531)299-2260 when your child is absent to verify the reason for absence. If unable to reach the secretary, please leave a message. This is also how we check on the safety of your child, knowing their whereabouts, especially if your child rides a bus. A staff member will be contacting you if your child has excessive tardies and/or days of unexcused absences.
If your child is absent they can make up the work when they return. If they are sick for more than 2 days in a row, we can have the work available for pick up at school at your request. Please contact the teacher ahead of time to arrange for pick up.
What can you do to help your child meet their attendance goals?
- Encourage attendance for your child.
- Establish a regular bed time and morning routine.
- Prepare materials and clothing the evening before.
- Schedule medical appointments and extended trips when school is not in session (vacation days are considered unexcused absences)
- Do not let your student stay home unless your child is sick.
Help your children have the best chance of success.
