Nationwide Kickoff. Across the country, schools will celebrate excellence in education by hosting kickoff events and activities.
Tuesday, November 13: Parents Day
Some schools will invite parents into the classroom for a firsthand look at what the school day is like for their children.
Wednesday, November 14: Education Support Professionals Day
Education Support Professionals keep schools running and students safe, healthy and ready to learn. An educational support professional of the year has been selected at each school. Faculty and staff members are encouraged to thank them for what they do to support the educational process. Pictured below are Florence 1 Schools Education Support Professionals (ESP) of the Year. In Florence 1 Schools, there are over 1300 ESP's.
Thursday, November 15: Educator for a Day
Community leaders will be invited to experience the day as educators and experience the challenges of teaching and the needs of students. Parents Invited to Learn More about SchooLinks at All Three High Schools This Week
Students in Florence 1 Schools have a new way to track their progress in high school and lay out their college and career goals. SchooLinks is a college and career readiness platform built for the 21st Century student.
With SchooLinks, students are able to explore their interests, find what colleges and careers are the best fit for them and create a personal plan for graduation and beyond. This program is available for 9th-12th grade students in all Florence 1 High Schools and their parents. All of the SchooLinks features are designed to be user-friendly and engaging, helping students prepare for college, career and life in a way that feels relevant to them. Using virtual reality, students can even take a tour of over 500 colleges and universities without leaving home.
Using SchooLinks, high school students and parents can:
● Explore 2-year and 4-year colleges
● Learn about options for financial aid
● Find internship and volunteer opportunities
● Explore a career in a variety of military fields
● Create digital portfolios / resumes
● Communicate with counselors
Parent meetings are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. this week at West Florence on Tuesday, November 13; at Wilson High on Wednesday, November 14; and at South Florence High on Thursday, November 15. For more information contact your local high school guidance counselor.
South Florence High School's Judah Gray: US Senate Youth Scholarship Semifinalist
South Florence High School senior Judah Gray has been selected as one of the state’s top ten semifinalists in the US Senate Youth Scholarship Program (USSYP).
The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) had 146 nominees to consider in this competition prior to selecting the top ten students. Gray will now move on to the final round of the $10K college scholarship competition by having a personal student interview before the USSYP panel of judges.
Additionally, Gray and his parents will be invited to attend the USSYP Semifinalists Awards Luncheon at the SCDE in Columbia. At the luncheon Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman will present each semifinalist with a Certificate of Achievement for outstanding achievements in education and commitment to community service.
Upcoming Events
Spanish Language Immersion Night will be held at Delmae Heights Elementary on Tuesday November 13th at 5:30 p.m. This event will showcase the Spanish Immersion Program in grades K, 1, 2. It is also an opportunity for families to come together socially as well, and be informed about ways that they can support student learning at home. Let the Spelling Begin
Students in Florence 1 elementary schools have recently participated in spelling competitions at the local school level. Those who have qualified will compete in Round 2 of the spelling bee which will be held on Saturday, November 10th at 9:00 a.m. at Delmae Heights Elementary School. Word callers for Round 2 are WPDE ABC TV 15’s Christa Costa and Zach Covey along with Wilson High band director Jarrod Deas.
Students who qualify to move from Round 2 to the next round of spelling bee competition (Round 3) will participate on Saturday, November 17th at 9:00 a.m. at North Vista Elementary. Word callers for Round 3 are Florence 1 Schools’ Renee Prosser, Megerlyn Davis and author Issac Wilson.
A first, second, and third place winner will emerge from Round 3.
