Curriculum Corner:

Math:

We will be taking our even & odd assessment tomorrow. The homework that your child has tonight is identical to the assessment.

Your child is expected to be able to:

Determine whether a number through 20 is odd or even using pairings of objects, counting by twos, or finding two equal addends to represent the number.

We have been working hard on this all week. If you have any questions please contact me.

Next week our focus will be:

Addition strategies.

This will give us a foundation for the standard NSBT.5:

Add and subtract fluently through 99 using knowledge of place value and properties of operations.

Reading:

We are continuing to learn our rules and procedures for Reading Workshop time and Guided Reading. Our focus this week has been taking a look at reading strategies. Next week, we will begin studying character, setting, and plot. We are also looking at beginning, middle, end through our writing units. When you are reading with your child at home, quiz them about how the author wrote a strong beginning, middle, and end.

Writing:

Personal Narratives continued.

This week we have been focusing on:

  • strong beginnings and endings.
  • looking at mentor text to get ideas for our own writing.
  • adding details to our writing.

Next week our focus will be:

Using details to describe actions, thoughts and feelings.

Science:

We started our "States of Matter" unit this week.

Our focus has been:

Analyze and interpret data from observation and measurements to describe properties used to classify matter as solid or liquid.

We started with sorting solids and describing them by their properties. Today we started looking at liquids and their properties. Tomorrow we will be exploring how liquids pour and take the shape of the container they are poured into.

Next week our focus will be:

Develop and use models to exemplify how matter can be mixed together and separated again based on the properties of the mixture.

On Wednesday of next week we will be making "Fizzy Purple Cow."

We will need ice cream and grape soda for an experiment. If you can donate either of those items, please let me know.

Snack time:

We have a read aloud/ word study/ snack time each day at 9:15. I do not provide snacks for the kids unless it is a special occasion. If you would like for your child to have a snack, please send one in with them. They are in no way required to bring a snack, this is personal choice.
