Mrs. Sema Duzyol Honored with National Education Award
Alpharetta, GA, August 28, 2019. Mrs. Sema Duzyol, Mathematics Department Chair at Fulton Science Academy Private School in Alpharetta, GA was honored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in August with the Edyth May Sliffe Award for distinguished mathematics teaching at the middle and high school levels. This national education award recognizes Mrs. Duzyol for her outstanding work to spark students’ interest in mathematics through participation in the MAA American Mathematics Competitions.
“It is my honor to recognize Mrs. Sema Duzyol with an Edyth May Sliffe award for the dedication that she brings to teaching mathematics,” said MAA Executive Director Michael Pearson. “The hours spent preparing students for and organizing MAA American Mathematics Competitions demonstrates her passion for helping the next generation understand the importance of mathematics in shaping our world.”
“I can not think of a more worthy person to deserve this prestigious national award” said Principal Kenan Sener. "Whether it is early morning, evening, or weekend, we always see Mrs. Duzyol at the school instilling her love of Mathematics in her students. Her dedication towards her students is beyond expression! It is the teachers like Mrs. Duzyol that help make Fulton Science Academy the school that we love!"
The Edyth May Sliffe Award was established in 1989 with a bequest from Sliffe’s estate. A high school mathematics teacher in Emeryville, California for 36 years, Sliffe wanted to recognize the nation’s top math teachers for their contributions. Sliffe winners are each awarded $500.
Annually, more than 300,000 middle school and high school students in approximately 6,000 schools participate in the MAA American Mathematics Competitions. The mission of the American Mathematics Competitions is to increase interest in mathematics and to develop problem-solving skills through participation in a fun event.
