High Lakes News
April 2016
Note from our Principal
It pains me to report that High Lakes playgrounds have now become “No Dog” zones. For years we have been reminding owners to please pick up after their dogs, but to no avail. We even tried locking the gates “open” to discourage people from bringing their pets, hoping that not having an enclosed area would cut down on the traffic. But, owners started barricading the openings with our large recycle receptacles so the custodian would have to move them back every morning. In the past month we have had a steady stream of children coming into the office covered in dog poo. Obviously this is a safety hazard. Our kiddos deserve a place to play where they don’t have to worry about falling in dog poo. The playground will be locked in the evenings after Bend Park and Recreation activities are completed and during the weekends. I am thankful that Discovery Park, just blocks away, has a fenced in dog park for our Northwest Crossing neighbors.
April and May is testing season. Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will be taking the Smarter Balanced (SBAC) tests in English Language Arts and Mathematics (plus Science for 5th grade). Individual teachers will be letting our families know when their children will be testing. These test results provide the teachers and myself with a tool to evaluate teaching and learning in our school and to compare our growth against state and national results.
The test results identify your child’s strengths and areas for improvement. Each subject will be broken into categories and will show how well your child performed in each area. The tests measure student learning on a 4-point scale. Scores will be shared with parents at the beginning of the next school year.
We certainly have been enjoying amazing weather for the first of April. It has been so fun for the kids to be eating lunch outside! We will continue as long as the weather holds.
Warmly,
Susan Heberlein
Principal
