Cell Phone Policy
Students are not allowed to use their cell phone between 8:10am - 3:10pm. There is a myth circulating that cell phones are allowed at lunch - This is false. One of the consequences of cell phone use is that the phone will be placed in a clear locker in the Student Services office. The student keeps the key to the locker and will be able to pick-up their phone at the end of the school day.
Below is the parent communication and consequence policy related to cell phones:
2nd report - Email notice sent to parent/guardian
3rd report - Email notice sent to parent/guardian, phone is placed in locker for 1 day
5th report - Email notice sent to parent/guardian, phone is placed in locker for 3 days
8th report - In-person parent/guardian conference, phone placed in locker for 1 week
10th report - Parent/guardian contact, additional disciplinary actions
Bathroom/Locker Room Violations - There is a zero tolerance policy for these spaces. A cell phone used in this area results in immediate placement in the locker.
If students need to contact a parent during the school day, they can use the phone in the Student Services office or get permission from a teacher to use their cell phone. We ask parents to not expect replies from students during the school day to support these efforts.
Tardy Policy
We encourage all students to learn the habit of being on time. Not only is it essential in the workplace, but it has an impact in the classroom. Students with tardies between periods 2-9 will be monitored each semester based on the following plan:
3rd Tardy - Parent/guardian is notified by email
5th Tardy - Parent/guardian is notified by email; lunch, before-school, or after-school detention is assigned
8th Tardy - Parent/guardian is notified by email; multiple lunch, before-school, or after-school detentions are assigned
10th Tardy - Parent/guardian is notified by email or conference is requested; lunch, before-school, or after-school detention is assigned
12 or more Tardies - Parent/guardian conference; discipline up to and including in-school suspension assigned
Parents/guardians are essential supports to our school policies. If you receive an email about cell phones or tardies, we encourage you to have a discussion with the student at home. You are always able to reach out to Assistant Principal Pryor with any questions.
Mythbuster!
Student Support Time (SST) is a critical, and required, start to the school day. (It is often referred to as the student's Homeroom.) It is from 8:10am - 8:30am. Important announcements are made during this time. Each day has a specific focus to support classroom efforts: Math, reading, and social/emotional learning. We have heard from some parents that they thought this time was optional - IT IS NOT. If you are dropping off your student, please have them arrive no later than 8:05am to allow them time to get to their homeroom.

NEED TO KNOW ITEMS....
Bulldogs Do Great Things!
We want to celebrate all you do.
Going Home on a Different Bus
At times, students may need to ride a bus home with another student for after school care. The seating on our buses is tight, but we want to help this out as much as possible. If your child needs to ride a route home other than their own, please do the following ahead of time:
- Both families (student going home on another bus and student taking the student home) provide a note to our Student Services office.
- The note must include the names of both students, the date, and a parent/guardian signature.
These notes need to be brought to the office the morning of the alternate route. We will then provide a note for the students to show the bus driver at the end of the day. Students WILL NOT be able to ride alternate bus routes without showing the correct notes to the bus driver.
Chromebook Insurance
It is once again that time of year to obtain coverage for your student's Chromebook, open enrollment is here! The insurance policy is for accidental damage and theft. There is no deductible and it will cover all repair costs and the cost of replacement should it get stolen. With the average repair cost above $50, it more than pays for itself the first time you use it and you can take advantage of it an unlimited number of times during the coverage year.
We highly recommend that every 5th - 12th grade family whose student(s) have a take home device to consider enrolling in this program. Attached is the flyer that gives you all the information on how to register, enrollment dates, and the cost. Thank you and have a great day!
Sincerely,
SD308 Technology Department

When to stay home.............
ILLNESS (SY 22-23)
Students and staff should not attend school/work when sick. Anyone exhibiting symptoms associated with COVID-19 (listed below) should isolate at home, and test for COVID-19 and/or be evaluated by a medical provider before returning to school/work. Testing is recommended regardless of vaccination status. The presence of fever, vomiting, and/or diarrhea requires that students/staff remain home for at least 24 hours after resolution of the symptom(s) without the use of fever-reducing medication.
Symptoms of COVID-19 include:
Fever (100.4°F or higher)
New onset of moderate to severe headache
Shortness of breath
New cough
Sore throat
Vomiting
Diarrhea
New loss of sense of taste or smell
Fatigue from an unknown cause
Muscle or body aches from unknown causes
If a student develops illness while at school, they may be sent to the nurse’s office for evaluation.
Upon evaluation, if COVID-19 is suspected, a nurse may offer the parent/guardian the option to have their student receive a rapid test to rule out COVID-19, and avoid being sent home; parent permission is required prior to testing students.
Students and staff with chronic or seasonal conditions which present symptoms similar to COVID-19 may provide clinical documentation to the nurse, to be referenced when such symptoms present at school.
In lieu of a test, when symptomatic, a note from a medical provider can be used to return to school. The note should include an alternative diagnosis and/or stating there is no suspicion of COVID-19, and that the student/staff is clear to return to school.
Regardless of testing, any person with a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea cannot return to school until fever-free for 24 hours, without use of fever-reducing medications, and free from vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours.
Parents and staff should follow normal procedures for reporting absence when students are ill.
If someone develops symptoms following a known exposure (within 6 feet for 15+ minutes) to a positive case of COVID-19, an individual may be presumed as positive unless a negative test result is received.
ENGAGING STUDENTS - Policy on cell phones & personal gaming systems
Bednarcik is continuing with our building cell phone and electronic device usage expectations for students. Students will be able to access and use their phone once they advocate for their need to a staff member. When students do this, staff will work with the kids to determine the best time to use their phone. This could be used for texting parents and other communication needs.
To help with this, we ask that parents and families do what they can to avoid texting students throughout the day. This provides constant distractions for kids and takes their attention away from the learning taking place throughout the day.
All students will have Chromebooks with them throughout their day and email would be a great form of communication if/when needed.
This doesn’t mean that students are not allowed to bring their phones to school. The expressed language in the student handbook states that students are to have their cellphones turned off and out of sight during these times except as approved by building administration, which is the same expectation from the 2022-23 school year. This will continue, and include the lunchroom as an area that students will need the permission to use their cell phones.
If you have questions, please reach out to Bednarcik Administration. Our number is 630-636-2500.

UPDATE for 2022 - 2023 School Year
Food Service
The federal program providing free breakfast and lunches to all students during COVID-19 has expired and meals are no longer free for all students. However, for families that qualify, free or reduced meals are available with an approved application.
Free/Reduced Lunch
Those who qualify for free or reduced cost meals must complete an application. The deadline to apply is October 1. Information and the application can be found here. This is the same program that was in place prior to COVID-19.
Meal Costs
Students who are not using the free/reduced meal program will have the option to purchase a complete meal, just a beverage, or ala carte options from the cafeteria at Breakfast and/or Lunch. Junior High and High School students should have their student ID with them in line during lunch, so applicable charges can be deducted from their balance. Elementary cafeteria staff will assist those students with charges.
Adding funds
Parents/guardians can add money to a student meal account eaily using the PushCoin online system; there is no transaction fee for doing so. Alternatively, a check can be sent to the school and the funds will be added to the student account.
Meal Choices
Supply chain challenges have decreased, so we anticipate that planned meals and food offerings will be more readily available, with less substitutions. Ala carte options are returning as they were prior to the pandemic- offerings vary by grade level. More information about offerings can be found on the Food Service page of our website.
Breakfast
Breakfast is available before school at all locations. It is open to all, including those with free/reduced lunch, and those charging their PushCoin account. Snack items can be chosen during the breakfast service and saved for a designated snack time or for after school. Options vary by school and building level.
