Here's What's Happening at East Meadows....
February is Love to Read Month at East Meadows!
We are kicking off a BIG month at East Medows and looking forward to promoting literacy and the love of reading. Each week during the month of February we will focus on a different theme and are challenging the students to READ EVERY DAY! More details below.
Next week is White Ribbon Week. This nationwide campaign is designed to help students develop strategies for being responsible digital citizens and to promote internet safety. Our theme will focus on being a "Media Detective" and students will learn how to think critically about what they are viewing online.
On February 13th our PTA is holding another Spirit Night at the new Sodamix location near the neighborhood Walmart. Stop by for a drink or a treat between 3:00-7:00 PM and 20% of the proceeds will be donated back to the East Meadows PTA.
Valentine's Day is coming up, we have the President's Day holiday on Monday, January 19th (no school) and we will finish up the month with LITERACY WEEK and our annual Books and Buddies event where students can bring a buddy to school to share a doughnut and choose a new book.
Read on for all the details! WE LOVE WORKING WITH YOU!
Read at least 20 TIMES during the month of February
Students are challenged to READ EVERY DAY. Students will be bringing home a punch card that they can use to track the days they completed their assigned reading.
- Kindergarten - 15 minutes
- 1st & 2nd Grade - 20 minutes
- 3rd, 4th & 5th Grade - 30 minutes
Return the completed punch card to your teacher by February 28th and use it at the Reading Marathon for an ice cream treat from the East Meadows Ice Cream Truck!
White Ribbon Week - Be a MEDIA DETECTIVE - February 5th - 9th
Students will be learning to THINK about what's happening online and on other digital platforms (social media, television, etc.) Each day we will be discussing the themes listed below and want to share them with you. We encourage you to visit www.whiteribbonweek.org for valuable resources on internet safety for parents!
Monday: T: Not everything you see online is TRUE. Think about if it's true, false or misleading.
Tuesday: H: HOW does it get your attention? Recognize how certain things grab your attention.
Wednesday: I: I can choose. Ask yourself, "Is this a good choice for me?" If not, walk away.
Thursday: N: What are they NOT telling me? Some things online don't tell the whole story.
Friday: K: Do I KNOW who made the message? Do I know why they made it?
PTA Spirit Night at SODAMIX - February 13th from 3:00 - 7:00 PM
Valentine's Day - February 14th
We will celebrate Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 14th. Teachers will be sending notes home about individual classroom celebrations.
This is such a fun holiday and it's even more fun when everyone leaves school feeling loved and included. We ask that parents please consider the following:
1. Please send a valentine for each child in the class so that no one is left out.
2. Please don't send "bigger and better" gifts or candy for only certain friends that will be handed out in front of everyone. If you have special gifts for special friends, please be discreet or deliver gifts outside of school.
3. We encourage parents to give Valentine gifts to their children (large stuffed animals, flowers, balloon bouquets) at home. Flowers, balloons and other deliveries will be held in the front office and given to students at the very end of the day to limit distractions.
Penny Wars for Warm the Soles at Nebo Credit Union - February 20th - 23rd
One, two, three, four, we declare a PENNY WAR... for charity. Over the week, students can bring in spare change and use it to bank up money for their own class or "bomb" other classes to bring down their total. The classes who earn the most will win a pizza party.
This year our school-wide charitable giving campaign will be a Penny War to help raise money for WARM THE SOLES which is a wonderful program sponsored by Nebo Credit Union to provide new shoes for children. All proceeds will be donated to Nebo Credit Union for this cause.
Students use silver coins or dollar bills to build up their own grade level team bank and then "attack" other teams with pennies which count as negative points. We will compete to see which grade level teams can earn the most for charity.
The games begin on Tuesday, February 20th.
