May 24th Meeting Recap
Wednesday, May 24, 2023 Place: Zoom Time: 7:00pm
Guest: Devin McNulty- Demarco, Cleveland Kids' Book Bank
I just wanted to email and thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak to you and everyone at the Metro Cleveland Alliance of Black School Educators last week. It was also incredibly moving to hear your mission and values statement by all your members.
If the group is interested, we can schedule a volunteer shift as late as the end of 2023. We'd love to host everyone and have them learn more about the book bank in person.
Guest: Michael Rizo, Program Specialist from the US Forest Service
By way of introduction, my name is Mike Rizo, and I work for the U.S. Forest Service. I specifically work in the International Programs office of the USFS (USFS-IP), with a focus on partnerships and community-level conservation projects in different communities of the U.S. and Latin America.
A lot of our work focuses on professional development training for teachers as a way to increase impact in communities. We have fostered partnerships with teachers at the Willson and A.B. Hart Elementary Schools and provided scholarships for classroom teachers to attend training related to inquiry-based education programs related to monarch butterflies, birds, and community science.
For 2023, we will be conduction 3 trainings geared toward K – 12 classroom teachers with the USFS providing scholarships for tuition, supplies, and meals during the course. We also have the option for small grants with one of the courses. As we are an international office, our trainings tend to focus on migratory species as migrate across international boundaries where we have established partnerships in other countries.
