Youth Crop Scouting Competition
Looking for a fun club project? Want to unite your club members? Running out of ideas for club meetings? If you answered, “yes” to any of these questions, help is on the way! Nebraska Extension is excited to present the 5th annual Crop Scouting Competition for Nebraska youth. Youth interested in crops have the opportunity to learn about crop growth & development and basic crop scouting principles.
Don’t know a lot about crops? Ask a local agronomist to assist by providing a short lesson on crop production. You can have the agronomist meet with youth a little during each meeting or outside of the meeting. This is one way to engage those youth interested in crops.
This contest will be held at the ARDC near Mead, Nebraska on July 26, 2018. The event will include both indoor and outdoor events. Teams of junior high and high school students (those completing 5-12th grades) from across Nebraska are invited to participate. This event is limited to the first ten teams who sign-up!
Clubs or other organizations may enter a team composed of three to five participants.
Top-scoring teams win prizes: $500 for first, $250 for second, $100 for third place. Top two teams will be eligible for regional competition in August at Nebraska.
Teams will be expected to know the basics of scouting corn and soybean fields. This includes crop staging; looking for patterns of crop injury; disease, insect and weed seedling identification; etc. Other topics many include but are not limited to, pesticide safety, nutrient disorders, and herbicide injury.
More information about the crop scouting competition is available online at cropwatch.unl.edu/youth.
Register at: go.unl.edu/cropscoutingregistration.
Teams must be registered by July 18. This program is sponsored by Nebraska Independent Crop Consultant Association, DuPont Pioneer, Farm Credit Services of America and Nebraska Extension.
National Wheat Yield Contest
The National Wheat Foundation is proud to once again host the National Wheat Yield Contest. This yield contest was held for the first time in 2016 and was well-received by wheat growers across the United States. The Contest offers growers the opportunity to compete with their peers across the United States and learn from each other innovative techniques to improve wheat productivity on their farms.
The Contest features two primary competition categories: winter wheat and spring wheat, plus two subcategories: dryland and irrigated. The top five winners from each category & subcategory, along with the overall high yield winner, will be recognized nationally, including at the winner’s reception during the 2019 Commodity Classic to be held February 28 - March 2, 2019, in Orlando, Florida.
Young farmers must be at least fourteen (14) years of age or older at the time of entry. Registration deadline is Tuesday, May 15, 2018. Complete entry and harvest rules can be found at https://wheatfoundation.org/rules-and-registration.
Nebraska Online Nomination for State Fair/AKSARBEN
NEW IN 2018 for families entering livestock for Nebraska State Fair or Aksarben.
An important change from past years is that exhibitors (4-H/FFA families) will be responsible for submitting their animal (market and breeding) information into the AKSARBEN livestock database online themselves prior to the nomination deadline (Market Beef - Friday, April 13). In the past, families turned in DNA envelopes and breeding nominations cards to the office, staff mailed them to AKSARBEN and the entry process was done manually by staff. This led to mistakes, missing entries, missing payments, etc.
The Saunders County Extension Office will still continue to mail in the DNA envelopes to the AKSARBEN office by the respected deadline (Market Beef – Friday, April 13, 2018). Once the information is in the database and has been validated by the Extension Staff or FFA Advisor, it will then be available for exhibitors to make State Fair entries similar to years past.
The database now has the capacity to accept animal information submitted directly by exhibitors (4-H/FFA families) as well as payments for the DNA process. The Nebraska 4-H Program staff will provide step by step instructions for doing this once the database is open to accepting entries. The process ensures responsibility on exhibitors (4-H/FFA families) with a number of safeguards in place for Extension staff and the Nebraska 4-H Program staff to monitor success. 4-H/FFA families will have the ability themselves to edit incorrect information (wrong tag number, wrong birth date, etc.) up to the deadline.
Please note for MARKET BEEF, any animal entry not in the database (done by the 4-H/FFA family before Friday, April 13) AND not submitted DNA (to the Extension Office by Friday, April 13) will NOT be considered nominated and will be ineligible for State Fair.

Winners Unlimited Judging Clinic
Winners Unlimited Judging Camps being held June 5-7 and June 11-13. The cost is $250 and covers participants’ lodging, meals, and all materials associated with the camp. Like we have done in the past, there will be an experienced and novice division as a part of camp, so we will tailor the experience to the participants knowledge base.
Livestock judging is a great way to install scientific principles and STEM learning using animals as the vehicle, and most importantly, is an event built around strengthening soft skills like communication, problem solving, and confidence. Please forward this information along to anyone you think may be interested. Thanks! Registration is to be postmarked by May 18.
Ne 4-H Camp Seeking Summer Help
Ne 4-H Camp staff are looking for older youth who are 19 years or older to spend their summer with us. Staff gain valuable leadership skills while working at camp. They will also gain many other skills that can transfer to any career, such as teamwork, problem solving, communication and increased work ethic. All attributes that employers are looking for in employees. Camp is a great place to begin developing these lifelong skills.
Staff will have the opportunity to work at both of our beautiful camp locations. We provide room and board along with an opportunity to network with many other staff from Nebraska as well as from around the world. Not to mention making a lasting impact on youth from across the state.
The commitment for staff is Mid-May through the first part of August.
If you know a former 4-H member and/or leader within your community that has a love of the outdoors and enjoys working with youth, we would appreciate referring them to check out the opportunities we have at Nebraska 4-H camps. Here is the link to the application, https://goo.gl/forms/nPBgqbnFY2roX4Mh2. We are looking to get staff hired now, we would love to see applications as soon as possible.
