A Note From the Teachers
We are so proud of all the hard work we are seeing in third grade! We have been working really hard to build our work ethic as we prepare for fourth grade.
Following spring break, third grade will begin intensive SOL preparation. It is vital that your child is at school EVERY DAY.
Third grade will be hosting a SOL Night on Thursday April 11th at 6:00 PM. We will focus on ways you can support your child at home for the Reading and Math SOL. You will walk away with resources as well as a better understanding of what your child will experience the day of the tests.
If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us.
Respectfully,
The Third Grade Team

Reading
We will be focusing on ways to improve our independent reading such as...
- Think about the text’s topic.
- Think about how text features can help in understanding the topic.
- Read the title and author, front and back cover blurbs, and table of contents.
- Study illustrations, photos, and graphics, including labels and captions.
- Skim for boldfaced words, headings and subheadings, and summaries.
- Think about what they know, what connections they can make, and what questions they might want answered.
- Think about the way the text might be organized, such as:
- cause and effect
- compare and contrast
- sequence of events
- problem and solution
- description
- a combination of these text structure
- Make connections
- Make predictions
- Make inferences
- Use context clues
- Use text features
- Identify text structures
- Use graphic organizers to pinpoint particular types of text information
- Write comments or questions on self-stick notes or in the margins
Math
Measurement: Students will continue measurement concepts by estimating and measuring length and liquid volume in U.S. Customary and metric units. They will estimate and measure perimeter and count the number of square units needed to cover a given surface to determine its area. Students will also be assessed on measurement concepts related to time and temperature. Time and temperature standards should have been taught and reviewed during classroom routines throughout the year. Students should be able to solve problems related to elapsed time in one-hour increments within a 12-hour period and problems involving equivalent periods of time.
