NORTH NEWS April 11th

Where tradition began, excellence continues.

Message from Principal David Ewers

Hello North Community,

We have a short week this week with no school on Friday. We will run a full block schedule this week with odd blocks on Monday and Wednesday, and even blocks on Tuesday and Thursday. This week also marks our first week with no late starts on Thursday. This will continue throughout the remainder of the school year.

Activities, performances, and concerts continue this week and into next. Please get out and support our students as they represent our school! They love seeing the community at their events. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office if you have any questions or concerns. Let's have a great week and Go Bison!

TICKET UPDATE!

  • We anticipate an outdoor graduation in the stadium. Currently, tickets will only be needed if the ceremony needs to be moved indoors, however we wanted you to be aware and begin planning for any possibilities. Graduates will have a limited number of guests allowed at the ceremony. Each senior will be provided 6 tickets to share with family or friends for admission to the event. The tickets are for each individual that attends. (Similar to a Royals game if you have a very young child that will sit on your lap, that child will not need a ticket). Please begin thinking about who you will include. We will deliver tickets to the graduating seniors at the graduation practice on May 13th
  • GradImages is the official photographer for our Graduation Ceremony. You can register for the graduation ceremony now and receive a coupon for 20% off. Visit www.GradImages.com/Registration for more details and search “Shawnee Mission North”

There will be more communication coming as graduation approaches. When we send these emails we will use the subject line of SMN Senior Email #1,2,3 etc. so you can be sure to know the order of communication. Until then please be aware of a few items that could be road blocks for graduating.

Academic Achievement: It is extremely important that every Senior knows where they stand academically and the classes they must complete to satisfy all graduation requirements. Check with your counselor if you have concerns.

  1. Financial Accounts must be in good standing: Please know that the current year fees must be paid in full to be able to participate in the graduation. Previous years and/or outstanding fees must be paid in full to receive your diploma. To avoid any issues please make sure you pay all current year fees no later than Thursday, May 6th.

Parents and Students,

Food Deliveries from Door Dash, Uber Eats, etc. are not allowed at SM North. Please encourage your student to refrain from ordering food for delivery. The delivery drivers will be turned away due to not having proper approved identification and this becoming a logistical issue. We appreciate your help in this matter.

REQUIRED VACCINATIONS

Thank you to all parents who have turned in updated vaccination records for our SMN students! We still have quite a few students who are missing at least one vaccine. It’s crunch time everyone.

We must have updated immunizations for our students on file before the end of the school year!

Please help us out in the nurse’s office and send any updated vaccine records to valsnow@smsd.org .

PLEASE, if you’ve been emailed or contacted by phone about a missing vaccine, students must have them done before they may enroll in school in the fall.

Our Johnson County Health Department is a good resource for updating vaccines, as is Walgreens, CVS, Mercy and Truth Clinics.

Vaccines can also be obtained at our Health Partnership Clinic at SMW on Thursdays during clinic hours from 11am to 3pm

If you need help contacting any of these businesses, please call us at 913-993-6907 or 913-993-6916.

Stay warm and healthy everyone!!

And, as always, thank you for sharing your amazing children with us!!

Nurse Kelly and Ms. Snow.

No Parking on Foster

The Overland Park Police Department has received many complaints about several cars violating the "No parking" signs on Foster. The no parking signs apply to both sides of the street on Foster at Johnson Drive. While we understand construction near the fieldhouse makes dismissal meet ups difficult, there are plenty of legal parking spaces in the lower lot just east of the tennis courts. Our community residents who live in the area are having a difficult time getting to their driveways safely at dismissal time. OPMC 12.04.096 parking in violation of a sign is a $60 citation. Please pass this information along to anyone who picks up your student as we would like to avoid unnecessary tickets to our school community.

Thanks, SRO Covington

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Students must pass their classes with a D (60%) or better in order to receive credit for the class. Students not attaining credits are in danger of not graduating with their classmates. Effective the 21-22 school year, the district will no longer reclassify students. We wanted you to be aware that even though students’ grade levels will progress from 9 to 12, this will not necessarily mean your student has enough credits to meet the graduation requirements. Per the SMSD Program Planning Guide, below is the chart of the minimum number of credits students must earn in order to remain on track to graduate with their classmates.

  • Students will advance forward in grade level based on the number of years they have been in high school. Beginning with the 2021-2022 school year, students will no longer be required to meet a minimum credit threshold to advance to the next grade level. However, students must meet all graduation requirements in order to graduate. The following chart should be used as a guide to evaluate whether a student is on track for graduation.

GRADE LEVEL CREDIT GOAL

End of Grade 9 - 5.5 credits

End of Grade 10 - 11.5 credits

End of Grade 11 - 16.5 credits

End of Grade 12 - 23.5 credits

You can find your student’s progress with their Graduation Requirements on your Skyward home page under “Graduation Requirements”.

Summer Programs are posted on the SMSD website:

eSchool

If you have questions or your student is behind on credits, please reach out to your student’s Academic Counselor by email or phone.

ATTENTION 10th GRADERS!

As a follow up to the demonstration in November, some North students have been meeting with administration to develop some plans to continue encouraging a positive climate in our school. Along with starting a new club, W.I.N.G.S. (Withstand, Influence, Notice, Gather and Speak), the students have organized an opportunity for 10th graders to learn more about sexual harassment.

During Seminar on one of the following dates, 4/12, 4/14, 4/26, or 4/28, you will have the opportunity to attend a presentation on sexual harassment, presented by professionals from MOCSA (Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault). One 45 minute presentation will take place in your seminar classroom, with your seminar classmates, and will allow you to still have time for schoolwork or related activities. If you do not wish to take advantage of this opportunity, please let your seminar teacher know as soon as possible, and we will have an alternate location for you to report. The partnership with MOCSA will continue next year, and will allow more students to have opportunities to learn more about other subjects.

Please plan to attend one (or more) of the WINGS meetings coming up (4/6, 4/13, 4/27, 5/11)- they will be right after school in Room 186. This is a great opportunity to get involved in a movement to bring about positive impacts on all of us at North. If you have any questions, please contact Gwyn Heidrick, Social Worker, 993-6927 or gwynheidrick@smsd.org
