CHANGES IN QUARANTINE GUIDELINES FROM THE MCHD
As Mr. Monroe’s September 30 letter indicated, there has been a series of adjustments in required quarantine guidelines. These adjustments from the Macomb County Health Department are for students who may have been identified as a close contact. The changes are the result of discussions between our district leadership and the health department and are based on concerns shared by our parents.
Our goal remains to keep our students in-person throughout the year. The new guidelines provide an avenue that families can take to return quarantined students to classrooms earlier if they meet certain conditions, such as a vaccination, a distance of more than three feet from the contact or testing daily over seven days through either a clinic or using an at-home kit. If you choose the at-home or clinic test option, our school will provide you a form to record the results.
In the event your student is a close contact, we will notify you via an automated phone call and email (if you do not receive regular updates from our school, please call the office to verify we have accurate information for you).
For more information, you may visit our district’s website regarding the required quarantine process and our school’s layered mitigation strategies. If you have any questions regarding the process or the learning plan for your child if a quarantine is necessary, please speak to your teacher or call our office directly.

NO ECD USE AT SCHOOL
The personal use of non-school issued cell phones or other electronic communications devices (ECDs) by students is prohibited at any time while in school or in a district vehicle. Students may carry ECDs during the school day, but they cannot be displayed or used without permission from a teacher or administrator for educational purposes.
Personal use of the device shall be limited to the time before and after the school day and only when students are outside the building. ECDs shall not be used during instructional time, lunch, passing time between classes or on any school bus without permission of a school official.
The use of an ECD’s picture-taking or internet connection capability is not permitted without permission of a teacher or administrator. Utica Community Schools will not be responsible for the theft, loss or damage of any ECD. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against students who violate the policy regulating ECDs.
BICYCLES
All students riding bikes to school should lock their bikes on the bicycle racks provided near front driveway onto Haverhill, and at the back of the school off the catwalk. For safety purposes, all students must walk their bicycles on school grounds (all sidewalks front and back).
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Attendance Policy
If your child is going to be absent call 586-797-4799 and leave a message.
Your child will be excused from class for illness, bereavement, recognized religious holidays and medical or dental treatment that cannot be scheduled after school or on weekends.
Your child is responsible for makeup work.
Homework requests may be made for an absence of two or more days in the case of both excused and pre-excused absences.
Homework requests require 24 hours to process.
VACATION POLICY
Absence for family travel during scheduled school days is discouraged.
However, should family travel be necessary, parents must submit a written request to the teacher for a pre-excused absence at least one week in advance.
Arrangements to complete classroom assignments can be made with the teacher.
You can arrange for home study through the school principal should your child be absent from school for an extended period due to physical disability or illness.
LATE ARRIVAL
If a student arrives late to school, the parent must accompany the student into the office, and the student must be signed in before he or she can go to class.
Truancy officials will be contacted in the event of a student having excessive tardies or absences.
HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION
School appropriate costumes may be worn to school or online by K-6 students:
Friday, October 29
We are looking forward to resuming our parade this year – weather permitting! More information to come related to our outdoor parade plans on Oct. 29th.
Friday, October 29th is a HALF DAY for all students (in-person and Virtual Academy). Dismissal is at 11:34 for walkers, and 11:44 for students who ride the bus and VA students.
SCHOOL APPROPRIATE COSTUME CHOICES
Students should refrain from violent characterization and may not use any fake weapons, fake blood, or any references to victims or perpetrators of violence for their costume choice at school. Violent characterization is unacceptable for school parades and where younger students might be frightened. If deemed inappropriate by school personnel, students will be asked to remove the costume and/or wash makeup.
Book, cartoon, folk heroes, historical figures, and period costumes are all good ideas to consider when thinking of the perfect costume. If you have any questions regarding suitability, please contact the school at 797 - 4700.
Since it is a half day (11:34 dismissal), students will be allowed to wear partial costumes to school. Check to be sure that your child can walk freely, and that the costume will be comfortable enough for the classroom setting. Masks may be worn (frightening masks not permitted) but those that impede vision should be left at home. Plan to have your child bring any costume props (wigs and other add-ons) to school in a bag or backpack.
