Inclement Weather Days

The inclement weather day in October was very surprising. I hope your electricity stayed on at your home and you were able to stay dry. This day of cancelled classes reminds us that winter is just around the corner. Please make sure that you have your contact information up to date in case we have bad weather days that require a change in our school schedule.

First Nine Weeks Celebrations

The first nine weeks has been completed and it is time to celebrate our students!

Typically, we have ceremonies in the classrooms and parents are invited to attend. This year things will look a little different. All of these events will be on Wednesdays and will be held via Zoom. The classroom teacher will share more information about the times of your class celebration. If you are unable to attend the live Zoom, it will be recorded and shared with all parents in the class.

2nd Grade - November 18

3rd Grade - November 18

4th Grade - November 18

Be on the lookout for more information from your child's teacher.

Growth Mindset and Productive Struggle

Parents,

We appreciate your partnership in your child's education. This year you have had even more responsibilities placed on you than in years past due to the unique setting of our school year. We are thankful for your support and we want to ensure that we provide support for you as well.

Two concepts that we discuss often as educators are Productive Struggle and Growth Mindset. These concepts place a high value on how we learn - specifically how mistakes help us learn. Below I have added some information about these concepts. As your child is working at home, we do not expect them to answer everything correctly - in fact, if we are able to see their mistakes then we can identify any misconceptions and address those gaps so your child has a greater understanding.

Please watch the video below to learn more about these concepts. If you are interested in learning more about Growth Mindset, you can google Carol Dweck and Growth Mindset.

Thanks for helping us give your child the gift of challenge and productive struggle.

BCS Digital Learning Help

Our BCS Digital Learning team maintains a helpful YouTube channel filled with instructional videos for teachers and students with topics relevant to Remote Learning! You'll also find support for English, Spanish, and Russian speakers with videos addressing access to Zoom, Seesaw, Clever, Google Classroom, the PowerSchool Parent Portal, and more.

Changes coming to Art, Music, PE and Media Classes for Hybrid Learners

Staring the week of November 9th, our specialists will have hybrid students who are at home learning, Zoom with their face to face learners. This means if your child is a 'B' student and the class has Music on Mondays, then your child will participate in the Music lesson via Zoom on Monday with the rest of the class. Since our specials are provided on a rotating basis, it would be confusing to put that schedule here but our specialists and your child's teacher will share more information.

Bottom line is that your hybrid student will have an additional Zoom on the days they are learning at home. Here are the times of the Zooms. More information will be shared by the specialists and your child's classroom teacher.

This DO NOT apply to Remote Only learners.

Special Times:

2nd grade: 11:00 - 11:30

3rd grade: 12:05 - 12:35

4th grade: 12:45 - 1:15

Important Announcement for Remote Only learners

Families of Remote Only learners will have the opportunity to sign up for Remote Only learning for the 2nd semester (Jan through June) or move to a Hybrid learning format. Your child's classroom teacher is reaching out to gather your decision and to answer any questions you may have.

We must have this decision by no later than Friday, November 20th. The reason there is a November deadline is because your decision could impact many things at our school including the master school schedule, teacher assignments, and even potentially room locations. We need time to prepare for 2nd semester. Thank you for understanding.

PTO Fundraising - A message from the Weaverville Schools PTO

Hello Weaverville Families,

We are excited to announce a new fundraising opportunity for our schools this year. We will be working with ShopWithScrip to offer gift cards for fundraising. Gift card fundraising is a great way to raise money for our organization. Buy gift cards from your favorite brands to earn on your daily purchases. No extra money spent.

How it works:

Raise money by purchasing gift cards at face value

Shop 750+ top brands and immediately earn up to 20% on every gift card you buy. You can easily raise $1,000 or more every year.

Use gift cards at full value for your daily purchases Earnings come from brands, not from your pocket, so gift cards are worth every penny. Raise money simply by doing everyday things—like grabbing your morning coffee or ordering dinner for the family.

How to get started

Create an account on the RaiseRight app or at ShopWithScrip.com using our organization’s enrollment code.

Seamlessly check out and receive eGift cards faster by securely paying online with a linked bank account or credit card.

Check your email in the next few days for more information about how to get started!

REMINDER ABOUT FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH APPLICATONS

OUR FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH PERCENTAGE IS STILL BELOW THE COUNTY AVERAGE OF 40% BUT WE DO NOT THINK OUR CURRENT PERCENTAGE IS ACCURATELY REFLECTS OUR LEVEL OF NEED IN OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY.

PLEASE CONSIDER TAKING A MOMENT TO COMPLETE THE FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH APPLICATION IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY DONE SO. IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE IN FILLING OUT THIS FORM, YOU CAN CONTACT ASHLEY MENDOZA IN OUR SCHOOL CAFETERIA.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE ONLINE APPLICATION.

Remember that families who qualify for this program may have other opportunities for support made available to them in the next few months.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT OUR SCHOOL COULD FACE DRASTIC CUTS IN OUR BUDGET ALLOCATIONS IF WE DO NOT HAVE AT LEAST 40% OF OUR STUDENTS WHO QUALIFY FOR THIS PROGRAM. OUR TITLE 1 FUNDING AS WELL AS OTHER FUNDING SOURCES IS BASED ON OUR FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH PERCENTAGE.

A message from Mrs. Benfield about the Panorama Survey

As you know, Buncombe County Schools has a strong commitment to educating the whole child. This means understanding how each child’s social-emotional skills contribute to their success in school and life. Social-emotional skills include such things as problem-solving, emotional management, and relationships with others. Many studies support the strong link between social-emotional skills and success in school and in future careers.

Between November 2nd and 13th, students in third and fourth grades will complete the Panorama Social Emotional Learning Surveys. I will be in the classrooms, as well as meeting with classes who are remote only, to help ensure that students can access their survey. The information will be used in planning instruction and emotional supports that meet the needs of all our students. The survey asks students to identify their strengths and challenges in everyday school and life activities and gives the school an overview of what issues need more direct instruction, intervention, or support. The results are not used by themselves to identify specific students for services of any kind. If you would like more information about this survey or to view the survey questions, please contact me at the school by phone or by email, which can be found on the school website.

HOLIDAY MEALS

One tradition that we love at Weaverville Elementary is for our grade levels to have special lunch days and parents are invited to enjoy a nice meal with their child. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are unable to invite families into our school building. Our Cafeteria will still prepare a nice meal for our hybrid students on November 17 or November 19 depending on if they are an 'A' day or 'B' day student.

Hopefully, we will be able to host a special event for families later in the school year.
