From the Principal's Desk
Hello Glen Grove Families,
It is hard to believe that it was almost exactly a year ago that my message to you addressed the anxieties and uncertainties with which we were faced as the global pandemic sent us on a course of uncharted territory as a school system and as a society. Therefore, the timing of this note gives me particular pleasure, because in addition to being almost a year after COVID closed our schools, it also comes on the brink of spring – a season that embodies a sense of renewal, hope and optimism, feelings that mirror what I think we are feeling as a society but also at Glen Grove as we prepare to have our students back full-time starting on April 7th!!!
Needless to say, we are super excited and very busy planning for our move to Adapted In-Person, so please look for an important newsletter to come your way the week of March 29 that will include information about what the move to full-time in-person learning will look like at Glen Grove. It is important to note that although our children will be back for full days five days a week, safety protocols necessitate that we make changes to many of our previously set routines, and school will look a bit different than it did pre-pandemic. My next newsletter will detail those routines and safety protocols.
We have also started planning for the 2021-22 school year, and part of that planning includes the very important responsibility we have of placing students into classrooms for the next school year. Look for detailed information about our student placement process to come your way in early April.
As noted in an email to you from Dr. Silverman, next week our students will begin taking the Illinois Assessment for Readiness (IAR), the official standardized assessment required by the State of Illinois. They will take three math tests and two English language arts tests, and our fifth graders will take three science tests in late April or early May. The Glen Grove IAR schedule is below.
As you know, school will not be in session March 22 - 26, so we wish you a safe, relaxing spring break filled with fun and joyful moments, and we can’t wait to have all of our desks and classrooms filled with children all day, every day next month!
Respectfully,
Helena Vena
Traveling?
Thanks to All Who Participated in Kids Heart Challenge!
Besides learning about how to keep their hearts healthy, our students raised over $21,000 to help others learn too!

Read Across America!
The Westbrook and Glen Grove PTA, with the help of the LRC Directors, is presenting Read Across America, a fun event that will run March 8 to 19. During the two weeks, students at WB, GG, and GOAL will have an opportunity to track their reading minutes as we work to achieve school goals:
Westbrook EC-2 50,000 minutes and GOAL EC-2 50,000 minutes
Glen Grove 3-5 70,000 minutes and GOAL 3-5 52,000 minutes
Families can track the progress of each school by visiting the WB/GG PTA website. Students attending in person can look at the bulletin board at each school to see the school’s progress as we journey across the United States from New York City to Los Angeles.
During the event there will be fun dress up days and special read alouds that will be shared with students. There is also be a virtual book fair and a book collection to benefit Bernie’s Book Bank and our Little Free Libraries. Check out the flyers to learn more details!
Let's Document This Historic Year!
While it seems like a year full of challenges, we’ll want to remember our resilience during this historic year! Help our amazing parent volunteers -- Carmela and Kim -- create yearbooks for Westbrook and Glen Grove by submitting your photos of this year’s dress up days, your student’s e-learning spot, Halloween, and other school-related photos to the following emails:
glengroveyearbookpics@gmail.com OR westbrookyearbookpics@gmail.com
Some students were not able to participate in photo day. Therefore our yearbook volunteers will not have their “class” photo from Color Portraits. If this is your situation and you would like to submit a headshot of your student, please clearly mark your email “Headshot Photo” and include your student’s full name, grade and teacher along with the photo. You can attach additional yearbook photos to your email as well - just make sure the headshot photo is clearly labeled. All photos will be included, although we have to work within the capabilities of TreeRing and headshots submitted this way may have to go on a separate page. We will do our best! We appreciate your understanding.

Mandatory Health Forms for 2021-2022 Incoming 6th Graders
Health Office Information
Students requiring any medications during school hours must file an "Authorization & Permission for Administration of Medicine" form with the health office. This form requires a physician’s signature as well as a parent’s signature. This form can be found here, under the Health section on the Forms & Documents page on the district website. All medication brought to school must be in an appropriately labeled pharmacy container. This also includes over-the-counter medicine such as Tylenol, Advil, cough drops, etc.
All student absences should be called into the health office at (847) 657-2394! In addition, please call if you will be bringing your child in late or picking them up early. The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time.
Don't Forget to Self-Assess!
When your child comes to Glen Grove, the student self-assessment needs to be completed BEFORE YOUR STUDENT LEAVES FOR SCHOOL so that it shows up in our system by the time your child arrives.
Thank you in advance - this eliminates the need for your child to stand in line unnecessarily!
Log in to District 34's PowerSchool web portal to complete the self-certification tool.
Click on the SELF-ASSESSMENT link on the home page to submit your child’s temperature and answer questions about COVID-19 symptoms and exposure. Click submit. If you have multiple students in District 34 attending in-person on the same day, click on each student to fill out the self-assessment for them as well.
Please note that the question about domestic travel has changed.
When students arrive at school, a staff member will scan their ipad barcode or bus pass barcode to confirm completion of the self-certification process.
Please be sure to send your child to school with their iPad, water bottle and mask.
Masks are required at all times when students are in our buildings. The District has provided cloth masks for every student and staff member; disposable masks will be available in our buildings for those who need them.
If your child rides the bus, they must wear their mask and remain in their assigned seat.
Thank you for helping to keep our school safe!
