Extended Closure and New Content
While the school doors are closed, instruction and learning has not stopped at Sheridan Hill and throughout all Clarence Central schools. Teachers, students, and families continue to support each other and bring new learning opportunities to digital platforms. The instruction and materials have been and continue to be focused on foundational concepts and skills which meet grade-level standards. Our teachers are continuing to build on these structures with new learning as our doors remain closed. Now more than ever, it is critical that your child be involved in the new learning and participating to the best of their ability. Distance learning does not replicate the optimal face-to-face classroom environment, but teachers are working diligently to provide instruction that does allow for students to interact with each other both in real-time and on their own schedule. Technological resources such as Google Meet, Google Classroom, Schoology, FlipGrid, Seesaw, etc. are used to connect students to their learning and classmates as much as possible. Both academics and social well-being are a focus when we can't be together.
As a mother of two elementary students, I understand how difficult it is to balance life, work, school, and sanity during this time! We thank you for continuing to do your best in an effort to make this at-home learning experience successful for your family. If you are in need, devices can still be requested through your child's teacher. Breakfast and lunch are also available daily at the High School, free to any resident 18 years and younger. Please do not hesitate to reach out for support or clarification on learning during this time- we are here to work together!
Parent Input Form Information
The Sheridan Hill Elementary School faculty regards the placement of students into classroom groups to be a very important professional responsibility. Our goal is to make the best possible decision, not only for an individual child but also for groups of children. We are committed to developing classroom combinations that are balanced with regard to strengths and needs. We strongly believe that all classes should reflect this balance. It is our belief that such classes maximize learning opportunities and are in the best interests of children and teachers. We are professionally committed to creating heterogeneous classes for each grade level.
The faculty at Sheridan Hill Elementary will work together to make the best possible educational decision about each child’s placement for the 2020-2021 school year. We thoroughly consider the following variables to arrive at a decision for individual children and to achieve a balanced grouping for each classroom:
★ Academic Achievement ★ Teaching styles ★ Work Habits and Study Skills ★ Gender ★ Learning styles ★ Time Intensive Needs ★ Behavior ★ Placement history ★ Social/Emotional Needs
While we encourage parental input about each of the above variables, parent requests for specific teaches can be problematic. Do not request a teacher by name. The best information you can provide to assist in our placement of students is a description of your child, rather than a focus on the teacher. Please remember that we value your input, and it will be carefully considered in class placement; however, we do have an obligation to create educationally balanced classes based on the above criteria.
If you would like to provide some input about your child for consideration as teachers build classes for next year, please complete the Google Form below, Student Placement Survey, and submit no later than Friday, May 15, 2020. All surveys received by May 15th will be given serious consideration when based on the above guidelines. If you need assistance filling out this form, please contact your child’s teacher.
