Hillcrest Newsletter
From the Principal; October 3, 2022
Dear Hillcrest Families,
Welcome to October!
We enjoyed seeing many of you at Hillcrest's Open House on September 22nd! Approximately 75% of students attended and we were thrilled to welcome you all.
We are also happy for the opportunity for parents to volunteer for field trips and in classrooms. It is up to individual teachers if they want to have classroom volunteers. Parent volunteers must complete an online application. A background check is conducted as part of this process. The application and background must be completed, approved, and on file before someone can volunteer. The district picks up all costs affiliated with background checks and volunteer applications are good for two years, once approved. Feel free to call the office at 541-756-8348 if you are unsure of your volunteer status. Volunteers must submit a copy of a Covid-19 vaccination card, or religious or medical exception in the school office and must not exhibit signs of illness on the day they volunteer.
If you have questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to contact me by calling 541-756-8348 or sending an e-mail to sfletcher@nbend.k12.or.us . Thank you, Hillcrest families!

Please be Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and Patient during School Dismissal/Parent Pick-up
Our staff work diligently to get students out to parents as quickly and safely as possible. Please be patient and drive calmly. Be respectful (our character trait for September) and responsible (our character trait for October). If you do not want to wait in the car line, feel free to arrive at 3:00pm when there are few to no cars in line.
Tuesday, October 11th is School Picture Day!
Two "No School" Fridays in October!
PTA Events
The second PTA Meeting of the year is Tuesday, October 11th, at 6:30pm at Hillcrest in the library. Please join this dedicated group; they work tirelessly to support our students.

Last Call - Parent/Family Survey; Please Provide Feedback!
We will draw three names from those who respond and prizes will be awarded to winners!
School and Student Safety
As mentioned in the September Newsletter, Hillcrest students practiced a fire drill, a HOLD drill, and a SECURE drill in the month of September. Here is a link to the September Newsletter for your reference.
On Thursday, October 6th, we will be practicing a Lock Down drill. Your student's teacher will be discussing what to do in the event of this type of emergency prior to the drill. Please be assured that all content discussed will be at an age-appropriate level.
On Thursday, October 20th, our school will participate in the Great Oregon ShakeOut. Since we live along the Cascadia Subduction Zone (a 600 mile long earthquake fault stretching from offshore northern California to southern British Columbia) we want students to know what to do in case we experience an earthquake.
Please know that we are doing everything we can to minimize risk and that we hold the safety of our students, your children, as the single most important responsibility bestowed on us as a school community.
Responsibility is our Character Trait for October
October 31st - Fall Celebrations
Parent Teacher Conferences - October 31st through November 4th
Safe, Respectful, Responsible
Please see below for a few things we talk with students about at Hillcrest.
We have friends at Hillcrest (but no boyfriends or girlfriends)
Words Matter
We talk with students about the importance of using kind words at school. We let students know that they should not say things like, "I am going to kill you" or "I am going to get you" - even if they do not really mean what they are saying. We let students know that statements indicating that you will cause harm or create some other kind of negative consequences for someone are called a threats and that threats should never be made at school. Staff take these types of words very seriously.
Toys, Tablets, and Cell Phones
Toys and iPADs/tablets should remain at home.
Students may bring a cell phone to school, and we ask that these remain in their backpacks until they get off the bus or begin walking home.
