GCPS: A Broad Prize Finalist

On September 22, 2014 @ 12:00 PM U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will announce the Broad Prize winner. GCPS is one of two finalist this school year. Share what you love most about our schools and why GCPS should win on FB/Twitter. Include @GwinnettSchools, #broadprize, and a picture.

Free & Reduced Lunch Applications

We have 114 students who will no longer receive any benefits as of Tuesday. This means they cannot charge nor will they receive a standard lunch. We can provide them with a PB&J sandwich with milk. The counselors, Mrs. Condon, & Mrs. McNally have worked with these families to complete their application. For some reason, the applications have not been completed. Please check Friday Folders for any applications and have a student deliver them immediately to the cafe.

I will ask Mrs. Condon to provide you with the students in your classroom who will loose this benefit after Monday's meal. Thanks!

CogAT Testing this week

We are not hosting any visitors for lunch or classroom visits this week due to testing. The front desk will relay messages from parents via email to you, as needed.

HOST Professional Learning Conference

Please consider sharing your expertise with your colleagues. I have an updated list of topics I will share via Lotus Notes. You can propose to share an essential instructional practice that is not listed.

We have extended the deadline to 9/26/14. The brief description can be bullet points of the key information being presented. Your evidence can be photos from your classroom. For instance, if you are sharing about conferring, take a photo of your organizational tool for your conferences. If you have any questions, please see a member of the leadership team, Ms. Todd, or Ms. Stocks.

Welcome to Ms. Spost!

Ms. Lauren Spost transferred from Mason Elementary to Benefield this past Thursday. She joins Ms. Heather DeGrace in the SDD Kindergarten classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15—October 15 we are celebrating Hispanic culture and the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States. On Friday, September 19th students are encouraged to dress as an influential Hispanic person who has made a contribution. The contributions can be in any of the following areas: government, science and medicine, literature, music, film, or sports. In addition to the costume, students need to write three facts about their person of choice and attach it to their clothing. We look forward to everyone’s costumes! *Please note—face paint is not acceptable.

Benefield Counselors and their committee have several events planned for our students! The counselors will email the list of activities/events. Thank you!

Hand Washing & Hand Sanitizer

It is best practice to always use soap & water to wash our hands. I encourage you to remind students to wash with soap & water especially prior to exiting the restroom. Hand sanitizer is best used in the classroom after a child has used tissue, coughed, or sneezed.

Computer Log Off

Save time and have your students click on the "log off" icon located under the ladybug :) Please use this step in the computer labs!

School Cleanliness

We need your support with students in the restrooms. Several students are putting food in the toilets and sinks. In addition, we have several students urinating all over the floor on a daily basis. We ask that you limit independent restroom passes to true emergencies. Please provide your students with class restroom breaks at least twice daily. Thank you for having your bathroom monitors check the condition of the restroom prior to entering.

Stellar Substitute & Long Term Substitutes

We continue to conduct interviews and search for a great Benefield match for these positions. We have not been successful in filling these positions. We will continue our search!

Relay for Life Jean Passes

Please support Relay For Life by purchasing jean passes.

You may wear jeans every Monday and Wednesday in the month of September for only $8.

Please paper clip cash or a check written out to Benefield Elementary to the form emailed by Dr. Patel and turn it into Mrs.Toland. Jean passes will be available beginning Monday, September 8th.

We have two Fridays this month that we will not be able to wear jeans due to visitors (9/12 & 9/19). This is a great way to wear your jeans!

Early Release Lunch

Sunshine will be coordinating the ordering of lunches for this day. Stay tuned for more information.

Chik Fil A Spirit Night

We are going to post all the spirit night events on a Signupgenius. Please consider donating 30 minutes of your time to support this event. All proceeds go to student recognition such as attendance awards, certificates, prizes, etc. Thank you to all our volunteers!

Congratulations to Ms. Randolph's 5th grade class for having the highest participation rate. Last week, Ms. Randolph's class celebrated with an ice cream party. Who will be next?
