Mission: To prepare each student for a successful future
Join the Effort to Educate About E-Cigarettes/Vapes
Recent research studies indicate that over the last few years, the percentage of youth engaging in e-cigarette or vape use has increased dramatically. Given that our top priority is the safety and security of our students and staff, this trend is very concerning. Please see the resources below for more information about e-cigarettes/vapes:
- E-cigarettes are battery powered devices that heat a solution of liquid nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals creating an aerosol that is inhaled by the user.
- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nicotine is addictive and has lasting consequences for youth brain development including impaired cognitive functioning and the development of addiction pathways in the brain.
- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has declared youth e-cigarette use an epidemic: FDA Press Release.

- An E-Cigarettes Learning Page is available at the NYS Center for School Health, a contracted technical assistance center for the NYS Education Department.
- Additionally, resources available at the NYS Department of Health Get the Facts Website
Our FLCC Biology class will be presenting information on this topic to our student body in the near future. Please join us in educating your child about the dangers associated with this activity. Thank you for your support.

Attendance - Every…minute…COUNTS!
Regular attendance at school is extremely important to each student’s success. Being in school on time every day is the first step in assuring that he or she will be able to complete all work, have necessary information presented first–hand, and experience a sense of positive self-worth as it relates to school. At NRWCSD every minute counts…every student counts!
Chronic Absenteeism – A student is “chronically absent” if they miss 10% or more of a school year. Approximately 18 days a year, or just two days a month.
Did you know?
- Starting in kindergarten, too many absences (excused and unexcused) can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10% (or about 18 days) increases the chance that your student will not read or master math at the same level as their peers.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor performance.
- By sixth grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
- When students are present at school they learn valuable social skills and have the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with other students and school staff.
- Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with schoolwork, dealing with harassment or facing some other potentially serious difficulty.
- By ninth grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
What we need from you
We miss your student when they are absent and we value their contributions to our school. We are asking for your help to ensure that your student attends school regularly and is successful in school. If your student is going to be absent and/or if you need assistance and/or support with ensuring that your child is able to attend school, please contact his or her teacher, counselor or Principal. Other ways you can help are by…
- Setting a regular bed time and morning routine for students.
- Preparing students for school the night before, finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
- Not letting your student stay home unless they are truly sick. (*Keep in mind that complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety.)
- Avoiding appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
- Developing back up plans for getting your child to school if something comes up.
- Keeping track of your student’s attendance. You can monitor their attendance on School Tool.
- Talking to your student about the importance of being in school on time each and every day, and for the whole day.
- Talking to your students’ teachers if you notice sudden changes in behavior or have concerns.
We are here to support you!
We know that there are a wide variety of reasons that students are absent from school (examples – health concerns and transportation challenges). There are many people in our district prepared to help you if your student(s) faces challenges getting to school regularly or on time.
- Principal/Assistant Principal
- Teacher
- Counselor
- Nurse
- And more!
As a district we do track attendance daily, and notice when your student is absent which is when we/the school office/nurse will contact you to understand why they were absent, and to identify barriers and supports available to overcome challenges you may face in helping your student attend school.
REMINDER - NRW Central School District Attendance Ladder – Reminder of interventions (attendance is checked for each child regularly and interventions are determined)
- Level 1 – (5%) – Member of Attendance Team contacts parent/guardian. Either the nurse will call home personally, or there will be an automated call. Team member(s) may also touch base the student.
- Level 2 – (8%) – Letter sent home including the attendance ladder and current attendance record.
- Level 3 – (10%) – Attendance Action Plan completed with member of Attendance Team and student. Parent/guardian contacted, Action Plan mailed home. Home visit may occur at this step.
- Level 4 – (15%) – Letter sent home requesting a parent meeting with the Assistant Principal to review attendance guidelines. *Potential home visit
- Level 5 – (>20%) – Possible submission of referral to county agencies (FACT, PINS)
