Newsletter Term 4 Week 1
St Patrick's School Masterton 19th October 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou,
Yesterday morning, we welcomed seven new students and new staff member Katrina Kennedy into Hub 1 and our school community. Katrina, is joining us for the final term of the year and will be working as part of the teaching team in Hub 1. We also welcomed sisters Sadie (Hub 3) and Locke (Hub 4) who have recently moved from Wellington.
Over the first half of the year we have been working with a company called ‘SchoolDocs’ to create a website for our policies and procedures. We are excited to announce that the site is now live and available to our school community. The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behavior management, reporting to parents, etc.
SchoolDocs updates modifies or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our community including the board of trustees, staff and parents has the opportunity to view and comment on them before they are updated and then implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.
In the meantime we invite you to visit the site at https://stpatsmstn.schooldocs.co.nz (note that there's no www.) and take a look at what it includes. Our school username is "stpatsmstn" and password is "kindness".
Regularly throughout the year we will ask for your feedback as we review different policies. Further details about how to do this will be included in next week’s newsletter.
Today and tomorrow the teaching staff are continuing to undertake professional development to use our school app to share student learning and progress with you in real-time. By this, we mean sharing learning either on or near the day it happens rather at a mid-way or endpoint of the year. The first part of this has been teachers learning how to share what is happening using the ‘Blog’ on the school app - this is an icon called ‘Blog’ with a picture of a red book. If you cannot see this icon please refresh the app - it may require you to log out and log in again. Throughout this term, you will receive updates on learning experiences that your child has been taking part in through this section of the app. In 2022, we will then move to include updates on specific learning goals in curriculum areas such as learner qualities, Catholic Social Teaching, writing, or maths. Either today or tomorrow all children will receive their first blog update, so please lookout for this.
We have made the decision to cancel our planned student-led conferences. These were initially scheduled for last term and then reorganised for week 3 of this term, but with the fact that our alert level is highly unlikely to drop to Level 1 by then, we have made the decision to cancel rather than to keep postponing. If as parents/ caregivers you have any concerns or have questions in relation to your child’s learning please contact your child’s teacher to arrange a time to discuss these.
As we start the final term of this year, planning is well underway for the 2022 school year. Can I please ask that if you have a child or know of a child who will be joining us next year, please make sure you enroll them as soon as possible? Can you also please let us know if your child will be leaving St Patrick’s at the end of this year. When making plans for 2022 it is really important we have the correct information to base this upon. Thanks for your support.

Term 4 School Theme
The start of a new term also brings a new theme for the children to be focused upon in their learning across the school. This is again based upon a principle of Catholic Social Teaching. For term 4 our principle will be ‘Distributive Justice’ in which the children will be learning that everyone should have access to their fair share of resources This theme will not only be seen in the area of RE but also be included across other curriculum subjects.
Gospel of the Week:
Mark 10:35-45
The Request of James and John
35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to Jesus. “Teacher,” they said, “there is something we want you to do for us.”
36 “What is it?” Jesus asked them.
37 They answered, “When you sit on your throne in your glorious Kingdom, we want you to let us sit with you, one at your right and one at your left.”
38 Jesus said to them, “You don't know what you are asking for. Can you drink the cup of suffering that I must drink? Can you be baptized in the way I must be baptized?”
39 “We can,” they answered.
Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink the cup I must drink and be baptized in the way I must be baptized. 40 But I do not have the right to choose who will sit at my right and my left. It is God who will give these places to those for whom he has prepared them.”
41 When the other ten disciples heard about it, they became angry with James and John. 42 So Jesus called them all together to him and said, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the heathen have power over them, and the leaders have complete authority. 43 This, however, is not the way it is among you. If one of you wants to be great, you must be the servant of the rest; 44 and if one of you wants to be first, you must be the slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served; he came to serve and to give his life to redeem many people.”

We have been really pleased to see the impact that Zones of Regulation is having on the children being able to name different emotions. We are hearing them use words like overwhelmed, frustrated, calm, focused etc. This week they are working on further understanding how they feel in different situations and what zone they may be in. They are further exploring the idea that different people respond to different scenarios in different ways.
This section will be updated weekly with information regarding the reviews of our school policies that you can comment and give feedback upon.
