Curriculum
What to Expect in 3rd Grade
Digital Renaissance
Our classroom will have MacBooks for each child. These will remain at school this year. Students will learn research skills and complete practice online, as well as using traditional tools. It is my belief that computers are just one tool, and are not babysitters!
Reading
We will use the Scott Foresman Reading Street skills progression to teach reading skills. Each week students will learn new comprehension skills, vocabulary, and spelling skills. After a 1-week reading of Ramona Quimby, Age 8, we will have a weekly test that will cover reading skills, and comprehension. Students will have classroom and school library books to read through the Accelerated Reader program. We will also practice real world reading through a variety of materials.
Spelling and Vocabulary
Students will have spelling words each week. Spellings tests will be given on Fridays. It is not necessary to spell vocabulary words, but they meanings are tested as part of the weekly reading test. Spelling and vocabulary lists can be accessed on spellingcity.com/meverette
Language and Writing
Grammar skills are taught and reviewed daily. Many times the grammar skills overlap with successful writing. Grammar tests are given on Friday. In addition, students will have opportunities to write daily in journals, as response to class activities and questions, and to show their thinking. Writing samples may be graded, but are not given as a "test" weekly.
Math
We use the Investigation series for math, along with supplements of Go Math, online activities, and other curriculum. Students should already be adding and subtracting easily, especially with numbers through 20. They will learn by completing hands on activities in class and games and activitiy ideas will be sent home.
Social Studies / Science
We incorporate much of our social studies and science learning with reading and writing throughout the day. Classroom projects, Internet activities, and group activities enhance the curriculum. Our grade will use Social Studies Weekly to support the curriculum. Some topics covered in first grade include chemical and physical changes, simple and compound machines, germination, map skills, and prehistoric Native Americans. We coordinate field trips to help bring these skills to life.
Handwriting
Third grade students should know their basic upper and lower case printed alphabet. We will work on cursive writing everyday, along with legible printing for most class work. We will continue to work on handwriting throughout the year.
Accelerated Reader
Students will begin using Accelerated Reader as they become independent readers. This may be earlier for some students than others. Students will be encouraged to read on their own as much as possible and I encourage reading with an adult daily (even if it is the back of a cereal box!) Accelerated Reader works on a point system, with students trying to reach a certain goal set for them based on their reading level. They also try to maintain an 85% or higher comprehension level. As more students are ready to begin Accelerated Reader, more information will be provided.
Homework
Students are expected to read everyday at home. There is math homework sent home most Monday-Thursdays to reinforce skills from class. It should be returned the next day. In addition, they should practice spelling words as needed to be successful.
