HERMAN E. DUMMER NEWSLETTER
March, 2018
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL, MRS. FORD
Busy, busy, busy! So many times I find myself frayed around the edges because when I think I’m getting close to catching up, it goes beyond my reach. I accomplish a task and ten more are waiting, breathing down my neck. If I stop to reflect, I know I will never catch up no matter how hard I try, because life’s demands are just plain hard, and if I’m truly honest with myself, I cause a lot of my own stress as well. “I can do just this ONE MORE THING”, which we all know turns into another and another and another… but every once in a great while, life throws me a sucker punch which makes me stop and put things back into perspective. Life is too precious to worry about the “next thing” or what “has” to be done. Time spent in the moment being thankful for what we have and who we have should be of utmost importance. Terrible things happen and this is exactly why we can’t waste time worrying over frivolous things. Time itself also happens and happens way faster than we can even imagine. Before we know it, time is gone and things we wish we would have done, said, loved…is now just, “I wish I would have or could have... “. We have been given a gift. Take it. Relish it. Embrace it. Love it. But most of all, LIVE IT! Don’t watch it from the outside in and see it pass right before your eyes. Jump in and make those memories that will last forever even when time is gone.
TESTING INFORMATION
As we wrap up February and enter into March, we have been preparing our students for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers test (PARCC). This test is administered to every public school student in grades 3 through 12 in the state of Illinois. Teachers and staff have been working diligently with the students preparing them on this new rigor of learning. We understand that building-wide assessments are stressful for teachers and parents, but most importantly students. We continue to try our best to prepare students without overwhelming them emotionally. Please support these efforts at home. PARCC testing will begin the week of March 5th.
Many other forms of gathering data are also incorporated throughout the year such as AimsWeb testing and benchmarking, MAP testing, RTI (Respond to Intervention) groups, and formative and summative evaluations. We are able to use all this data to better help our students and teaching. It is important that you get a chance to track your child’s growth throughout the year. Hopefully you have had a chance to discuss your child’s progress with his/her teacher. If you would like more information about these tests or your child’s scores, feel free to contact your child’s teacher, or me, at 815-786-8498.

It’s not too early to start planning for next school year. Below is a list of health requirements for entry into 6th grade. The physical exam and immunization record are due by the first day of school.

Health packets will be sent home prior to Spring Break, with your child. Health forms may also be found on the district website or picked up in the main office. If you have questions about any of these requirements you may contact Mrs. Meyer, School Nurse at 815-786-8498.
NATIONAL POISON PREVENTION WEEK IS MARCH 18-24, 2018
If you suspect a poisoning or if you have questions regarding poisoning, call your Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222. When you call this number, you will reach a Poison Center covering your area. Poison Centers are staffed by specially trained nurses, pharmacists and physicians and are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The call is free and confidential. To learn more about how to help prevent poisonings, visit: poisonhelp.hrsa.gov. Almost 90% of the public who call a local Poison Center get the help they need over the telephone without having to go to a doctor or the hospital.
Poison Prevention Tips:
• Make sure all potential poisons are out of the sight and reach of children
• Keep medicines and household products in their original containers with original labels
• Always read labels before using medicines, cleaners and other products
• Teach children to ask first before eating or drinking anything
• Never call medicine candy or make a game out of taking it

FABULOUS 5TH GRADE
FABULOUS 5TH GRADE
Over the next month, our math curriculum will include the topics of volume, converting measurements, interpreting data, and algebra. We will continue to work on research papers in Writing. Language Arts (Grammar) will include demonstrating a command of the conventions (when writing and speaking), explaining the function of conjunctions, prepositions, and interjections, and using correlative conjunctions. At the beginning of March, we will hold our 5th Grade Science Fair/Open house. Families are welcome to come in to view all of the amazing projects. In Social Studies, we will finish up learning about the Constitution and will "move" into our Westward Expansion unit. In Reading, we continue working on quoting accurately from text and drawing inferences in both literature and information text, comparing and contrasting narrative elements and overall structure of text, continue understanding point of view, and drawing information from multiple print and digital sources.
After all of this, students and staff will certainly be ready for a relaxing Spring Break which will begin on March 26th. We wish everyone a wonderful spring break, with time to relax and reconnect with family!
