CATCHING THEM IN THE ACT
A CONSERVATORY PREP NEWS LETTER
Week of February 15-19, 2016
I know that everyone enjoyed going to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts this past week to see Shakespeare Improv and then have the opportunity to partake in a Master Improv class.
HandsOn Broward came out to speak with our students about volunteer opportunities. One particular interest are the Teen Service Club for ages (13-17) and Kids Care Club geared towards Middle School. For more information: http://www.handsonbroward.org/programs.
Next week we will be sending out portfolios for each student. The portfolios have videos with privacy settings which are only shared with the student and parent. This will give a glimpse as to material being covered in the classroom.

HAPPENINGS OF THIS WEEK
Master Class With the Shakespeare Improv Troupe at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts
Middle School Math
Students are learning about volume by using legos and creating origami. Some made cubes, some made rectangles, after which they calculated the volume.
Middle School Science
Students are learning about the human skeletal system. They made a model of it and are now learning about the different bones in the body.
Middle School Ancient Cultures
Middle-school geographers look on a large map those topographical features that make China's southern region fertile, and those that expose the neighboring country of Bangladesh to disastrous flooding. Next week the Mongols will Guide our path through Manchuria, Tibet, the Gobi, and Southern China; and we will work through Genghis Khan's problems as he faced them.
Middle School Genius Hour
We are ready to go. February 27, 2016, the Florida Regional Palms Odyssey of the Mind tournament!
Middle School English
Nikko displays his and another student's traditional Chinese puppets. The students will tie their reading about the arts and culture of China to the history of its rule by the khans, and produce an interpretive puppet show. After last week's lesson on calligraphy, Nikko is looking forward to the beginning of penmanship lessons next week.
Middle School Science Art
Populating the human cell with our cartoon organelles.
U.S. Art
Kyle is working on his Norman Rockwell inspired illustration. He has chosen to use a proportional grid transfer to enlarge his sketch to the larger paper.
Geometry
Students have completed their unit on similar polygons and have begun their explorations into proving triangles similar. Students will apply the Angle-Angle Postulate and the Side -Angle-Side, and Side-Side -Side theorems, as sometimes these can be used to find lengths that cannot be easily measured using a ruler or other measuring device.
Physics
Students are learning about potential energy by making a pendulum clock.
Freshman English 1
Matthew and Kaitlyn don Florentine headdresses as they learn their lines for an oratorical presentation of the Dyalog between Death and Alexander VI Laboring under a Fever, written in 1550. Next week they will write their own dialogues, taking positions on which art is the higher: painting or sculpture.
Freshman Latin 1
A collegial game of Scrabbulus is enjoyed by all. The Latin students are beginning a mini-unit viewing and researching Greek and Roman mythological figures as they are represented in fine art. We'll note how the artist worked the deity's attributes and iconography into a pleasing, naturalistic composition.
European History
We are continuing our trip through European History with an in-depth look at the Reformation and the Enlightenment. Next week we will celebrate the end of our unit with the first Conservatory Prep Renaissance Festival. Our invited guests will include Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and William Shakespeare. It should be an exciting celebration!
European Art
Working with linear perspectives, one, two, and three point, as it was rediscovered in the Renaissance.
Geometry Art
Finishing up our proportional grid covers
Pre Algebra
Pre-algebra continued their 2-step equation solving skills by taking on another fashion design problem. Students picked their own garments to redesign independently and had more variables to control to lower the wholesale cost and retail price for the consumer. They are ready to move on to the world of math in video games!
High School English III
We just finished our unit on Our Town by having our own debate for student government positions, just like Emily and George. Students have also been rehearsing their monologues on stage, learning the finer points of presenting. We will be starting poetry in the coming week
High School Math for College Readiness
Simplifying radicals requires a review of special sets of numbers. Yakira and Lindsay are working to identify perfect squares, primes and using these to simplify radicals.
High School Algebra II
Rebecca is getting one on one help with factoring and the idea of working backwards. This skill is applied to Polynomials.
High School U.S. History
Next week, we will be debating issues tied to the Six Big Ideas of the U. S. Constitution. It should be an exciting week as we apply our knowledge of the Constitution to some modern events and situations that we are facing as a nation, such as the appointment of a new Supreme Court Justice and National Health Care!
High School American Art
Ryan working on his Norman Rockwell inspired drawing.
High School Environmental/Biology
Students are amazed learning about their environment. Students are grouped into pairs and were given a topic to research. After researching they had to present it to the class. Some of the topics included were the aquifer, fracking in Florida, etc.
High School Latin I
The class takes a breather after oral exercises. Last week the students worked in pairs to write translations from the Latin, demonstrating their solid grip. They've now begun a mini-unit viewing Greek and Roman mythological figures as they are represented in fine art, noting how the artist worked the deity's attributes and iconography into an interpretive, naturalistic composition. A researched essay and original artwork will follow.
