What's going on at RMS?

October is Anti-Bullying Awareness Month. Russellville Middle School will focus on learning activities this month during our mentoring periods that promote anti-bullying behaviors. Please read a few of the statistics I found online concerning bullying in schools:

  • 1 out of 4 teens are bullied.
  • 8% of students stay home from school on any given day because they are afraid of being bullied.
  • 1 out of 5 kids admits to being a bully or doing some type of "bullying".
  • 43% of students fear harassment in the bathroom.
  • 282,000 students are physically attacked in secondary schools each month.
  • 43% of students have been bullied "online" while 1 in 4 have had it happen more than once.
  • 35% of students have been threatened "online".
  • Most bullying happens in middle school!

School personnel play a huge role in protecting our students against bullying among teens in our school. Below are five tips that will help teachers, administrators and other school personnel prevent bullying from occurring at school and how to respond when it happens:

  1. Create a Safe and Supportive Learning Environment: Establish a classroom culture where everyone is included and respect is demonstrated among faculty and students. Talk to students about appropriate peer relationships.
  2. Manage Classrooms to Prevent Bullying: Work with students to establish classroom rules that set high expectations for a climate of respect and responsibility. In addition, continually monitor classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and other areas where students are present.
  3. Stop Bullying on the Spot: If you see bullying taking place, stop it immediately and address the situation. Talk to students separately to find out the facts of the situation and if needed, send students to school administrators.
  4. Be a Role Model: Model respectful and appropriate behavior in the classroom by showing students respect and encouraging them to be successful. Demonstrate kindness and caring as you interact with your students.
  5. Reward Good Behavior - Look for ways to affirm good behavior that motivates students to demonstrate positive behavior at school.

October Reading Strategy - "Writing Around the Text"

We encourage ALL teachers to implement our October reading strategy into your classroom instruction at least once this month. Please let us know when you are engaging students in these activities so that we can come by your class and see your students at work!

Parent Involvement Month

October is also "Parent Involvement Month". Parents play an important role in the education of their child and make a positive impact on their child's learning. We have planned a month full of activities that give parents the opportunity to come to school and learn with their child! Talk with your students and encourage them to invite their parents to attend these events!
