Marvelous Mathematician News - Mrs. Phariss
How can 2 mean 20, 200, or even 2,000? When it moves into the tens, hundreds, or thousands spot, 2 is transformed into something much bigger! Use these activities to help your child play with place value.
Pull out a number Have your youngster number 10 slips of paper 0–9, place in a bag, and shake. Ask him to pick two and arrange them into as many numbers as possible—using one or both slips. Let him name each number and record it on a sheet of paper. Then, when he’s comfortable with two-digit numbers, he could play again with three slips and form three-digit numbers, too. Example: If he selects 2, 5, and 8, he could make 2, 5, 8, 25, 28, 258, 852, and so on. Help him look over the numbers and compare them. He’ll see that a digit can represent ones (2 ones in 852), tens (2 tens in 825), or hundreds (2 hundreds in 258)—depending on its place
Park your trucks Suggest that your child draw three parking spaces and label them (left to right) “hundreds,” “tens,” and “ones.” Then, he can park a toy truck in each spot. Take turns giving each other 3-digit numbers to create by putting sticky notes on each truck. Example: If you say 492, he should write “400” on the truck in the hundreds spot, “90” on the truck in the tens spot, and “2” on the truck in the ones spot. Ask him to say the number out loud like this: “400 + 90 + 2 = 492.” That will help your youngster understand what 492 is really made up of. Take off the notes, and let him park the next number!
Name the number Play a simple guessing game to help your youngster become more familiar—and comfortable—with place value. Have your child secretly pick and write down a five-digit number. Then, she should give clues about each digit. They could be math problems or tied to numbers in the real world. Say her number is 78,936. Her clues might be: “The digit in the thousands place is the number of tentacles on an octopus.” “The digit in the ones place is even and greater than 4 but less than 8.” “The tens digit is the number of sides of a triangle.” “The hundreds digit is the answer to 795 – 786.” “The digit in the ten thousands place rhymes with eleven.” Name her number, and then swap roles. Note: Players can use scratch paper to work out the answers.
Pattern detective Recognizing patterns will give your youngster practice in mathematical thinking. Ask him to put on his detective hat with this fun activity. 1. Think of a pattern (add 3). Write out numbers in the pattern, leaving one blank (3, 6, _, 12, 15). 2. Now your young detective has to collect clues about the missing number. He might think, “Each pair of numbers is 3 apart.” Using his clues, he’ll recognize the pattern as “add 3” and the missing number as 9. 3. Now, have him use his detective skills to determine the 10th number in the pattern (30) or the 20th (60). Ask him to explain how he figured it out. 4. Take turns posing more patterns. Ideas: Try ones with several steps, such as 4, 16, 52 (multiply by 3, then add 4). Or start with a number other than 0.

Mrs. Sexton will be teaching students about Caring in this month's guidance lessons.
Counselor's Corner
Hello LVES Families! The character trait for the month of December is Caring. Being a caring person means showing understanding of others by treating them with kindness, compassion, generosity, and a forgiving spirit. In our guidance lessons this month, students will learn ways they can show they care about their families, friends, teachers, community members, animals, and the environment.
If you or someone you know could use a warm coat this season, please visit the Lago Vista Clothing Closet! It is located behind the Lago Vista Intermediate School in Portable 6, and is open on Mondays from 12-2, and every 3rd Monday from 4-6 pm. There are lots of clothing items to choose from in toddler to adult sizes. The Clothing Closet is available for all of our community members. For the safety of students, all visitors must check in at the front office of the intermediate school.
Show you care by letting someone know about this valuable community resource!
