Sovereignty 101:
If you’ve ever taken a Minnesota History class, you probably know that there are 11 sovereign tribal communities in Minnesota: 7 Ojibwe, 4 Dakota. But what is sovereignty and what does it mean for a community to be sovereign? The simplest answer is that sovereignty describes a nation that governs itself. So does that mean that tribal communities and reservations all have their own governments and laws? Yes and no. See the below PDF for more information about important dates and more information on Native American Heritage Month.

Boys and Girls State Competition
This past summer, these 6 Seniors had the privilege to attend Boys State and Girls State: Finn Dillinger, Brian Jones, Carly Ahlstrom, Erica Babb, Elyse Schroeder, Noelle Van Voorhis and Carlo Leisdan (missing from photo). This is sponsored by the American Legion and the Women's Auxiliary.
Participants learn the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens. The training is objective and centers on the structure of city, county and state governments. Operated by students elected to various offices, activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreational programs.
Legion posts select high school juniors to attend the program. In most cases, individual expenses are paid by a sponsoring post, a local business or another community-based organization.
Congratulations on being selected to represent Andover!
