Notes from the Nurse
- If your child has any health condition requiring medication ie: asthma, a food allergy, bee sting allergy or takes medication, please notify the nurse. In addition, orders from the physician should be given to the nurse regarding your child’s health condition.
- Please make sure your child is up to date on all their immunizations. The chart below indicates which vaccines are required for students entering each grade. Students entering 6th grade this fall require a Tdap booster.
- If you are choosing to not have your child immunized you must sign a waiver. Even if you had signed a waiver last year, you will need to sign a new one for this school year.
- With the start of school comes the possibility of lice. Please remind you student not to share hats, brushes or anything that can come in contact with hair. You can prevent lice by doing weekly lice checks at home, and by informing yourself. Please click here for a great resource on everything you need to know about lice.
- On September 18-19, students in grades 4k thru 5th grade will be given vision and hearing screenings. If you do NOT want your child to participate, please notify the school nurse, (715) 356-5206 x2204 or pholtz@mhlt.org.
- Northwoods Dental Seal-A-Smile program will be at MJ1 Schools on November 13-14 to offer dental sealants to all 2nd and 6th graders. A dental sealant is a thin plastic coating that covers the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars), where most decay occurs. Northwoods Dental sets up a portable dental clinic at school so children can receive an oral health exam, dental sealants (if necessary), dental supplies and oral health education. You should have received a letter and permission form (click here), which we are still accepting here in the front office. Or, you can click here to sign your child up.
- If you child will be playing a sport this year please make sure they have an up to date sports physical. Sport Physicals are good for 2 years.
"Hope in a Backpack" program
If your family would like to have a backpack of supplemental food items sent home with your child on Thursday of each week, please contact our school social worker, Deb Schillinger.
We are hoping our MJ1 families will help out by donating items! There is a bin in the front office where students/parents can place these donations - we appreciate it! In September, we are collecting individual cereal boxes and fruit & grain bars.

After School Detentions
One of the possible consequences for a student getting a Major Write-Up is an after-school detention. Detentions are held on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 3:15 to 4:00. Please contact A.J. Salquist if you have any questions about this - thank you.
Student Absences
Please remember to leave a message on the Message Line when your child will absent - call (715) 356-5206 and press Option 1 (do not call the front office to report students absent, please). Students will be excused up to ten days during the school year; students are eligible for up to five additional planned absences if a pre-approved absence form is filled out and turned in to the front office at least one week prior to an absence. Parents MUST contact the school for their child’s absence to be excused.
Absences are considered medical only if a doctor’s note is provided. This is a bit different from last year - all illnesses are considered family-excused without a doctor's note.
