Recent Classroom Happenings

We have covered a lot of ground in Mrs. Carter's 6th grade since school started a little over a month ago. I have seen growth in the students' maturity, work ethic, stamina, and perseverance. I will continue to challenge my students each and every day at Apache Innovative School so they can grow in all aspects of their life. It is important to me that my students are not only well-rounded academically, but also behaviorally and socially.

The 6th grade team started data review meetings this past week to ensure each student's individual needs drive our instruction. Our goal is for our instruction to be data-driven and innovative to promote student growth. Starting this week, students will begin receiving small-group instruction in both Reading and Math that meets them at their exact level of need. I will progress monitor students monthly, bi-weekly, and weekly depending on their needs to monitor their continued growth and progress.

Please watch for a conference sign-up form coming home this week sometime. I would like to set up a face-to-face meeting with all my students' parents and/or families to start developing our parent-teacher partnership as early as possible, discuss your student's strengths and needed areas of growth, as well as discuss things we can do both in school and at home to best meet your child's needs.

Headphones & Earbuds

If your child does not have headphones or earbuds at school, please send a pair they can keep at school 100% of the time. These were on the school supply list at the beginning of the year and are a necessity for students to have for many of the educational iPad apps we use daily. You can get reliable and reasonably-priced earbuds at The Dollar Tree. Thank you!

STEM Activities

Students have participated in fun STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) activities to build relationships with one another and develop cooperative skills that lead to being successful. Students did a cup-stacking challenge and bridge-building challenge. After building their bridges, students tested them to see which one held the most pennies. Our bridges turned out great! They were incredibly stable and they all held more than 14 pennies without breaking. Our winning bridge held 26 pennies!!!

Perfecting Our Geography Skills

We have been working on our Geography Skills in Social Studies this year. Students have completed many geography-based activities that require them to utilize globes and maps throughout the classroom to perfect their map skills. They have learned about the features of a map, latitude and longitude, continents, and oceans. We are wrapping up our Geography Unit by designing and creating our own maps. Students are having fun getting started with this project and I am excited to see the final products!

Naming a New Elementary School

Students had a blast working together to research the City of Lenexa in order to suggest names, mascots, and colors for the new SMSD elementary school being built on 87th Street just west of 435. Students created presentations they then shared with their classmates to share the name, mascot, and colors they chose. We are so excited to see the name, mascot, and colors the district chooses and hope they choose one submitted by Apache Innovative School - students are so proud of their final contenders that were sent to the district for consideration.

School Names that were submitted include:

  • Osage Park Elementary
  • Lenexa Elementary
  • William Nichols Elementary
  • Chanute Elementary
  • Black Hoof Elementary
  • Firewood Elementary

Kindergarten Buddies!!

Students have very much enjoyed getting to know their Kindergarten buddies over the past 3 weeks. We have established great relationships with them and work with them weekly to support them in their classroom in whatever way possible. We have helped them with writing their names, writing a simple sentence, and iPad support so far. Our buddies' eyes light up each time we visit and our fabulous 6th graders serve as wonderful role-models!! This relationship building will be essential to each student's growth this year at ApacheIS.
