COUNSELOR OF THE YEAR!!!
UPDATE ON SCHOOL CLOSURE AND MARYLAND RECOVERY PLAN
On Wednesday, May 6, Governor Larry Hogan and State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon announced that all Maryland schools would remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. Although our school buildings will remain closed, online learning in MCPS will continue until June 15, our last day of school.
Maryland’s Recovery Plan for Education states, “The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the landscape of education more dramatically than any other phenomenon in the history of our school system. An event of this magnitude will definitely impact how we provide education to students.” It is our sincerest hope that students and staff will be able to return to our school buildings in some form in the coming months. However, we know that it will be strikingly different than what we’ve always known school to be. The loss of face-to-face interactions, collaboration and celebrations is difficult for our students, staff and families. Schools are the heart of our county and community. Please know that in addition to student learning, we will continue to support the physical, social-emotional and psychological needs of our students.
INTERIM REPORTS FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS
Given the transition to the Pass/Incomplete framework for the 4th Marking Period, MCPS will be sending interim reports to students who are in danger of not passing a course for this marking period based on the established criteria. Senior interims will be mailed the week of May 11 and interims for students in Grades 6-11 will be mailed the week of May 18.
We want to remind families that a decision has not been made about calculation of the overall semester grade, Grade Point Average (GPA) or how grades will be reported on transcripts. The Board of Education will discuss and approve a final plan at its May 12, 2020, business meeting. The meeting will be broadcast live on the MCPS website (www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org) and on MCPS-TV (Comcast 34, Verizon 36 and RCN 89). We will provide an update to the community once the Board takes final action.

FAQ's
As we continue to improve the Continuation of Learning plan, we want to make sure that you are still provided interactive opportunities for reteaching, checking for understanding, unscrambling confusion, and discourse related to your weekly lessons. During scheduled times on Tuesday through Friday, all your teachers are expected to be available to you through web conferences, email, and/or other digital platforms for additional instruction, support and re-teaching. These sessions are important because they are a way for you to get help from your teachers, hear new information, and participate in discussions. This is also how you can meet Measure #3 below.
So now we have four measures that determine whether or not you pass your classes, but you’re probably wondering what this all means. Please read over the questions and answers we have provided below to help you understand things a bit more.
Mindfulness Moments
MCPS has created a new series of videos entitled Mindful Moment. The goal of the Mindful Moment Series is to deliver simple and effective tools for all of us to manage our anxiety and stress. These videos, which can be accessed and used at any time, can be found here.
There are strategies designed for both elementary and secondary students, adults and families. Each video is presented by MCPS staff who lead you through a Mindfulness exercise. Some employ physical exercise, some offer breathing techniques, while others demonstrate mental exercises—all of which are proven mindfulness techniques to relieve the effects of stress, worry, frustration, depression, anger, fear and restlessness.
