SCREENAGERS
Autrey Mill Middle School PTA cordially invites our parents and their students (middle school age and older) to attend a special viewing of SCREENAGERS, a documentary that probes the impact of screen time on the adolescent brain and offers resources and solutions to help families navigate the digital age. View trailer
The viewing will be on Thursday, January 25, 2017 at 7:00pm in the Cafeteria at Autrey Mill Middle School. Tickets are free! Space is limited, so reserve your seat today.
SCREENAGERS is a 70-minute film that probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including the director's own, and depicts messy struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Rather than attempt to navigate these uncharted waters alone, the goal of Autrey Mill Middle School PTA is to begin to shine a light on both the opportunities and challenges and take a proactive approach to parenting and teaching our children through it together.
Thanks to Circle Media we are able to provide this presentation free to our Autrey Mill Middle School community! Circle Media offers a device that pairs wirelessly with home Wi-Fi and allows families to manage content and time across home's connected devices.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to AMMS PTA. We look forward to seeing you for this important presentation.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER
HOME ACCESS CENTER (HAC)
Please check Home Access Center (HAC) on a regular basis to review your child’s grades. Alerts can be set up so that you are notified if their grade has dropped.
NHI (Not Handed In)
If your child fails a test with a 69 or below, their teacher will contact you or you should contact them, regarding them having recovery for the test. The recovery for the test must take place in order to help prevent your child from failing that particular class. HAC http://www.fultonschools.org/en/sp/Pages/default.aspx
HELP SESSIONS
Please see below for the link for Help Sessions. They take place from 8:00 a.m.-8:30 a.m. or 4:05 p.m.- 4:35 p.m. For morning sessions, students must report on time. The teacher for the subject will go to the cafeteria, call the subject and walk the students to the classroom for the help session. We also have tutors from JCHS on Tuesdays from 4:05 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Please take advantage of these vital resources! http://school.fultonschools.org/ms/autreymill/Pages/HelpSessions.aspx
Also, www.khanacademy.org is a great resource for math and other STEM subjects! Please check and see if your child has it installed on their iPad. It can be found in the catalog under Khan Academy.

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS
READING
Reading students have continued studying short stories this semester with a focus on the mentor text, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut. We are focusing on literal and inferential comprehension skills, vocabulary, and comparing different versions of texts (short story, screenplay, and short film). We will have a Harrison Bergeron vocabulary quiz on Friday, January 26th and our first test of the semester encompassing the entire story and all of the above skills on Wednesday, January 31st.
Remember that reading students should be reading 30 minutes at home nightly. We are currently compiling data from the 2nd quarter regarding which books your students completed between October 16th and January 8th. I will announce the winning class and top readers for the second quarter before the next newsletter. In the first quarter all of our students together read 315 books, an average of 5.94 books per student. I hope we can beat that number for the second quarter. Please remind your child to continue to read and for you to model good reading practices as a family – alone, with a parent or sibling, with an audio book playing while viewing the text – any reading is good reading!

WORLD LANGUAGES
FRENCH
Dear Parents,
AMMS is pleased to be hosting Linguapalooza 2018, the annual middle school world language speaking competition, on Saturday, February 24, 2018. This is one of the highlights of the school year. Several hundred middle school students will be taking part in the event to showcase their skills in the different world languages we offer in the county.
As hosts we are looking forward to providing a great environment for students, judges and parents to enjoy. We will be relying heavily in our student volunteers from our school who will be greeters and runners. Their job will include accompanying interviewees to their stations, ensuring that score sheets are submitted, certificates printed and delivered for the announcement.
Student volunteers are expected to arrive at school by 7am and will be released no later than noon. They will receive training ahead of time to familiarize them with their specific duties and answer any questions they may have.
We sincerely appreciate them giving up their time and we thank you in advance for supporting the World Language Department.
Sincerely,
Merci beaucoup,
Mesdames Sudu et Blackburn

AMMS INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY
AMMS Instructional Technology is working to build a Virtual Reality Lab to provide these experiences for all Autrey Mill students. Through your donations, you will be providing our students at AMMS with cutting edge opportunities and preparing our students for the jobs of tomorrow.
STUDENT HEADPHONES/EARBUDS
Our classrooms are equipped with desktop computers and student personal iPads, which will be used throughout the school day integrating technology into the curriculum and providing additional personalized learning opportunities for our students. In order to work independently on these devices and not be disruptive to others, students need to use earphones. We would like to ensure that each child has their own set of headphones or earbuds for their individual use. We are committed to provide students with their classroom supply needs, but knowing that the use of specific headphones or earbuds can be very personal, if you are able, please provide your child with a set of headphones or earbuds. We wouldn’t want any of the students to miss out on any multi-sensory learning experiences.
